Superman, as a character, concept or franchise, does not work, period. There's nothing inherently wrong with his supposed role as a flying brick who's kind and wholesome, but it all falls apart when the worldbuilding has to support the metanarrative of his importance. He has to be the absolute strongest and smartest and bestest and the absolutest beacon of hope and yadda yadda. At the same time he has to remain just a "good ol' boy from Kansas" and have mostly terrestiral adventures. His origin must remain the same for the "allegory" and his powers as well. Which means that basically you have a random alien reaching god-status due a common star, which means every single Kryptonian should be Superman level, but the uber-tech-advanced race never figured it out, and then there's a bunch of Superman adjacent sidekicks and- None of it holds under scrutiny.

Superman just does not work on any level. The only way for him to work would be to severely weaken him in order to keep the characterization and lore going. But he cannot remain all-powerful, with this exact backstory, and keep being the heckin blue boyscout. Superman type characters which are god-like only work in more contained series, like MiracleMan. Because then he and Krypton can have an actual impact on the universe. As it stands, there's no good reason why Superman is still in the same place he was ~90 years ago, or how the Kryptonian society and biology even work. Not from a realistic standpoint, but from a narrative one.

Ideally, Superman should be reworked into an antagonist for Batman. And his limited and subpar supporting cast and villains should also be folded into the Batman lore. Now that DC is losing the copyright, is the perfect time to actually do this. Superman doesn't have anything in him to keep an ongoing, not really, and all his villains are cliche and one-note. He cannot change genres or evolve. But Batman easily can. After all, Batman is the MC of DC. And he must be revitalised too.

'CAUSE NO ONE WANTS TO KNOW THE MAN WHO STANDS FOR THINGS WE OUTGROW
HE'S TOO NOBLE AND TOO BLIND
WE'RE ALL OLDER NOW AND WE DON'T NEED SOMEONE TO CARE ABOUT
THE INNOCENCE WE LEFT BEHIND
DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL
IT'S JUST THAT GOODNESS IS OUT OF STYLE

I will never get the people who unironically try to claim this. Not only are you wrong but you're telling us you're unimaginative and lazy some you can't be bothered to read any of the one hundred years of comics to see how people make him work
