I'm confused by how people jump into events for DC. I want to get into Absolute Power but the recommended reading is Dark Crisis, and the recommended reading for that is a bunch of the other Crisis events. Do they do a good enough job explaining themselves in the beginning that I can jump straight into Absolute Power and then move onto DC K.O.? Or does it pay to take it slower and go back a smidge for the extra context? I've been bored waiting on things to read and want to find out why Darkseid is doing what he's doing without going to check some dumb youtube video.

No you're not.

Figured it'd be worth asking in case people cared about the event more. I usually just jump into runs and ignore everything else.

Honestly you can read the DC All In one shot and then move on to DC KO. If you like it enough you can go back and read the other stuff like Dark Crisis (which was kinda meh, it was made when DC movies were in limbo and they thought the Rock’s Black Adam was going to be a hit so he’s a bigger character in it than he should be). Absolute Power is better and kinda gets the DC house in better order than it’s been since the 90s. But there really isn’t anything in Absolute Power that’s a must for DC KO I don’t think, just something to read if you end up liking KO. But really just start at the DC All In one shot.

I wouldn't bother reading any of the events honestly, because they're generally confusing, poorly written, and irrelevant to the mainline book stories.
Having said that, you do kinda need to understand the other crisis events to get themost out of Dark Crisis. Absolute Power sets up the Absolute universe, if I'm not mistaken, so that's only relevant if you want to know how the Aboslute universe was made. DC KO is just random shit.

I started with the All-In one shot and have been loving the Absolute stuff. I keep hearing about things going on in the main universe in relation to it though and it made me curious to go back a bit. I'll take your advice and use my time to go read through Absolute Power and finish that up, thanks anons.
If it's true that the DC events aren't as well done then that kinda sucks. Growing up with Marvel events, they flip flopped between good and bad a lot but I always wanted to see if the grass was greener on the other side. At least I'm having fun catching up with so many books

I’ve liked DC events more than Marvel’s, Marvel’s always felt kinda forced like “we have to do one every summer”. My DC event rec list is
>Crisis on Infinite Earths
>>Zero Hour cleans up some messes left from Crisis but I wouldn’t call it necessary
>Infinite Crisis
>>52 is the fallout from Infinite Crisis which I absolutely recommend it’s fantastic, only the most /co/trarian of /co/ntrarian will say otherwise
>Final Crisis
>>it’s best to read this one in a vacuum, Grant Morrison wrote it and asked there not to be any kind of build up to it which was ignored by the higher ups at the time where they did Countdown which is god fucking awful. Just read the Final Crisis trades. If you like Final Crisis read Seven Soldiers
Bear in mind those events are anywhere from 20-40 years old so it doesn’t really affect modern stuff but they’re still fun reads. A guy named Dan Didio had a stranglehold over DC for like twenty years and he ran the place like a kid with ADHD. Oh, one more
>Sinestro Corps War
>>it’s not a DC-wide event it’s localized totally within the Green Lantern franchise but it’s really fun and big enough to feel like an event

I always heard the hubbub around Crisis on Infinite Earths (Perez does some of my favorite work), and since I started Batman and the Outsiders not too long ago, I can't wait to binge through it. I'll keep the rest in mind as well, thank you very much for the detailed response!
I'm also glad that I can skip through the New 52 stuff, the mid 00s to 2019 or so are probably my least favorite years for the big two.
