I hate how Rick and Morty is the lead-in show for Primal. That being said, Common Side Effects is an excellent choice for a following show after. It’s actually really good. If anyone hasn’t watched Common Side Effects, feel free to do so. Yeah, the art style is a little weird at first, but you quickly get used to the feel. It’s used really well later with the drug visions, and the eyes and expressions during the more somber moments.

Just a warning, some episodes deal with dementia, I know that can hit close to home.

I view animation and art in a totally different light to other people. Rather than say "grr so-and-so should've done such-and-such", I take things as they are and see what the author is trying to say. Genndy has nothing but talent, budget, and time on his side, and he mused about the anthology thing and it evidently didn't work for him, and that's completely fine; even great auteurs can have missteps. I fully trust Genndy to tell the story he wants to tell, and am eager to see how he does it.

This episode made me realize how existentially terrifying it would be to eake up as a zombie. Not a typical zombie like the first season or a george a romero zombie. But just as a corpse brought back to life. Seeing Spear exist as more of just this thing that exist rather than himself. Just seeing his eyes where he's not sure what he should be doing.

I think the thung that got me was just how he vaguely remember he used to draw on caves, just seeing him make lines in the sand knowing he is somewhat coose to what he remember but still soo far away as the lines don't represent anything.

Loved the series. Biggest issue was the S2 finale which wasn't even a bad idea but that's not the kind of thing you rush in one episode, especially when you're killing off the main character. I assume as Spear gets more of his memory and humanity back in the season he will showcase more of his cunning and savvy since I figure Genndy will want to start with showcasing how being a zombie means he can put Spear through more abuse in fights but also show more inhuman displays of strength so humanoid foes for the first episode showcases that balance well as a frame of reference and also how he deals with the crocodile for contrasting the more season 1 style animal/prehistoric threats he faced. Admittedly I'm not sure if paleofauna threats will be as much a thing in this season though the trailer still showed him fighting what looked like a theropod and riding a Pterosaur but we are guaranteed some interesting fantastical threats and creatures at least from the trailers so it won't just be him fighting humanoids.

What was it about Season 2 which turned people off from it in your opinion?

I still like both seasons alot but I feel the boat subplot took too much time away from everything else. I think it should of been squished down into one episode.
I don't mind the random girl Spear saves in theory but I think their focus should of been on the vengeance plot with the viking guy getting turned into a demon.

The finale was disappointing but I still love this series alot. Kinda makes me sad that I didn't gel with that Unicorn show since I do like Genndys stuff (even the weird ass dog balls movie they did) but I do feel alot of his stuff is hit or miss.

for me is that no matter how you tried to praise it it was bad. presentationwise, season 1 clears with it having more grand moments in the form of a big climax every episode. once you pay attention to season 2's story you see that the story itself is shittily and lazily written, something that can be forgiven when in short episodes where the only goal for the characters is don't die and the only goal for the episode is to look cool, but more notable when you have every episode connect in a story that's slowly building toward something without the focus on presentation. reason being that in those short episodes where the goal is don't die, there isn't any progression to judge, but when there is a progressing story and you see lazy bullshit writing all along the way every bit of progress feels unearned.
most importantly season 2's shift to a continious story, sidelining of fang and lesser focus on presentation made it feel like a different show than the one that got me watching it in the first place so in a way i feel tricked, especially when what i got instead wass worse.

New ep was better than anything in the last season. S2 had strong moments, but got bogged down in it's world over the tight visceral connection with Spear + Fang that defined the first season. I get he probably wanted to open up the scope of the universe and add a swathe of new characters but Genndy really needed to replace that tight connection with something more or equally enthralling and it just wasn't there. Samurai Jack S5 had the same problem. Those first five episodes were super tight and enthralling, but the latter half delved too deep into every Tom, Dick and Harry Jack had ever met and that concise relationship between him and Ashi was pushed to one side. And then, of course, everything else on top that was wrong with the final season.

Watching Spear trudge through the undergrowth was kindof heartbreaking. When that fly landed on his eye and you realise that there's basically nothing left of the person that he was, I just said out loud 'God, please let him die', It's like watching a Frankenstein with Alzheimer's. But the way he slowly starts to find himself and instinctively protects others was really endearing, in particular the scene where the Lepers reach out to him was more emotionally engaging than anything I've seen in a while. Just amazing animation, voice work and sound design. That I considered this show over and a zombified Spear for season 3 an admission of defeat was wrong. I am glad to have been wrong.

in fairness i was on the fence about them being lepers. the face scaling came off like something else, but the bandaged limbs and the fact EVERYONE there is like that is what clicked eventually.

I feel like they always gave him some pretty solid limits, most of which are just.. himself. It's a classic man vs self story, with the added wrinkle that the guy he's TRYING to go after is a different VERSION of himself. While simultaneously joining that guy's family and being a better grandpa, without them realizing how much worse off they could be Rickwise.

though I have trouble figuring out if that's still true of each dimension they transplant to.. did THAT rick also abandon his family and go kill another rick's family?

IPs are milked forever now. same characters, same indicia. If they wanted to start over, they'd start over with a new SHOW, since union regulations mean if a show goes on X seasons they have to start paying you more (also why titles change sometimes to dodge that)

Plague is scary in a way that I find incredibly refreshing.
It's not some lurking terror, hiding in the shadows and stalking you like a slasher villain.
The horror is right there, out in the daylight. It doesn't need to hide. It's the biggest, strongest, most dangerous thing in this whole fucking jungle, and you can't do a god damn thing to stop it but run and hide, because the moment it even scratches you you're destined for a fate worse than death.
It strikes the same sense of terror as a genuine kaiju. Except unlike a Kaiju picture where humanity usually has weapons and the tools of civilization to at least attempt some sort of defense, Spear and fang have absolutely nothing that can even come close to harming this thing.
And it's all underscored by how wrong this thing's existence is. Big herbivores irl may not be the gentle giants some people may romanticize them as, but I still usually have a subconscious association between really big land animals and a lack of active malice. Things don't get as big as a sauropod when they have to hunt and kill for a living. They can be territorial, sure, but usually you wouldn't expect them to actively hunt you down. Seeing one of them turned into a rabid berserker like this feels as unnatural as it was intended to feel.

I think seeing the epilogue of the kids and the dinosaurs is to tell us "don't worry, they had a happy ending. but we won't be seeing them again, because this isn't a happy show" and this takes place directly afterward
