Why did we not return to gruesomeness in comics after the CCA was totally ignored?

1. Marvel and DC now had franchises to take care of so anything that's excessively gruesome would just get relegated to a Mature Readers book or something
2. There were people in the Big 2 gunshy about it because they didn't want another situation like the 1950s where parental groups and shit came down on the industry again
3. Indies did do gruesome in the comics depending on the title, you just don't read them because either those books are out of print and people aren't talking about them, or you think Marvel and DC were the only companies in the 80s

Frankly old EC wasn't even that gruesome by modern standards it's hard to pull off the level of detail needed for that with 50s printing.
