Not so fast, turtles! You may have won the first battle, but the war is far from over!
>>
Children don’t even know who these three are anymore.
>>
>>152112231
There was actually a moment when turtlemania died in mid-90s while Flintstones got second wind with 1994 movie
>>
These old boomers were right in that the '87 turtles reruns didn't last long after the show itself was cancelled. There's a joke in one of the early episodes of Two and a Half Men where Charlie Sheen's character brags to his young nephew about writing the theme song to impress him (because showrunner Chuck Lorre did write the lyrics) and the kid has no idea what he's going on about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnrH-xFwWbw
Though that's also a sign of the changing times. Most new cartoons in the 70s and 80s just sucked so it was pretty easy for the old classics to compete with them. The 90s-00s animation boom made it very easy for old cartoons to fall by the wayside.

2 days ago I had a dream where I was in the US and I was ordering a hotdog and I used a fake Fred Flintstone voice because I didn't want anyone to know that I was a foreigner. Everyone knew. I never got the hotdog.
>>
>>152112231
Kids would recognize Fred Flintstone as a cereal mascot.
>>
>>152112164
I don't think anybody has given a shit about Dennis for decades outside that live action movie at most and I don't think anybody ever gave a shit about Woody Woodpecker period.

The Woodpecker has a very distinctive laugh and theme song which managed to get him two tv revivals.

Funnily enough 3/4 of those are now on MeToons.

>>
>>152112804
I don't think Dennis had any popularity then. Nobody I knew liked him. I think that was one of the things older execs thought we liked and he basically just filled air time. It's really hard to judge ratings sometimes especially when some shows will just be there as we wait for something good to come on. See Doug

Each one lasted three seasons, so they served their purpose as "something to entertain kids for 30 minutes that they forget about as soon as they stop watching."
>>
>Check Dennis The Menace on Youtube
>Just shows all the live action Dennis' before showing the 86 cartoon.
Dennis is an odd lil' outlier.
>>

>>
>>152114306
I remember liking the 86 cartoon as a little kid then thought it was lame as shit.
>>
>>152113161
>I don't think Dennis had any popularity then.

He had enough popularity that the 80s cartoon kept getting rerun in syndication well into the 90s

Late Millennials and Zoomers on here don't get that shows that last for few seasons could get a second life in reruns. Gilligan's Island had 99 episodes over three seasons and that show was continuously rerun for decades
>>
>>152112231
Kids in Brazil know Woody Woodpecker.
>>
>>152112804
Yank Dennis got mogged by his Beano counterpart
>>
Maybe I'm not up on my Dennis lore, but wasn't there a separate Dennis cartoon in the 90s? Maybe it was just reruns and I didn't know any better, but I'm pretty sure it had different animation and voice actors.
>>
>>152114658
There was, in 1993. It was done to capitalize on the 1993 film but it only lasted one season with only 13 episodes.
>>
People who say Dennis the Menace had no popularity in the 80's and 90's forget how big newspaper comics were at the time. Dennis the Menace was in every paper. It is irrelevant now, however.
>>
>>152114345
Only in Brazil at most.
>>
>>152114489

Dennis was moderately popular up until Ketcham died and is still running as a comic.

The problem for it is that Ketcham was such a terrible person that nobody really has much interest in reprinting the old strips so it's just another legacy strip that only exists because old people might complain if it gets dropped.
>>
>>152112649
Why did they change the colors tough?
>>
>>152114835
Fantagraphics did try to reprint the entire thing but only got up to 1962 and all the volumes are long out of print. I think it was less to do with Ketchum being a terrible person and more to do with people mostly not aware of the character in the 2000s/2010s
>>
Didn’t Flinstones syndication die soon after this because CN scooped it up? Even the popular oldshit they couldn’t keep

They also quit right around the time all that stuff came out as well if I remember right.

>>152114998

His first wife died of a drug overdose while they were separated with a lot of people saying that it was the result of his treatment of her. He didn't tell his son, who the strip was based on, about it until years after his mother had died but maintained that she had abandoned them both. Three weeks after her death, he remarried to somebody he promptly moved to Switzerland with and packed Dennis off to boarding school in Connecticut so he wouldn't have to put up with him.

Dennis later went to Vietnam and got PTSD on top of all the mental problems from his childhood; not just the "thought his dead mom was still alive" thing but the whole Christopher Robin situation where people found out that Dennis the Menace was based on him. I think he also asked for some money based on that fact; Hank just called him a deadbeat and pretty much cut off any real contact with his son.

Both of you miss the point

The reason there was a show was because it was a way to keep getting the theatrical Woody Woodpecker shorts funded, and it worked (they kept making theatrical Woody Woodpecker shorts all the way to 1972, past when studios like WB gave up on making theatrical cartoon shorts)

The show kept getting rerun in syndication so it wasn't like the show aired a season, disappeared, and then came back years later. It was continuously aired from 1957 to 1966 despite only having two seasons, then got revived with three more new seasons in the 70s to air the 60s and 70s cartoons.

Even after they stopped making theatrical shorts, they still aired the cartoons in syndication from late 1970s to at least the end of the 1980s.
>>
>>152112164
I often wonder just what these guys are trying to prove here when they make things like this.

It really just comes off like an angry old man screeching
>Things I liked as a kid are still cooler than the crap you little bastards are into now!!!
>>
>>152112804
There was a Dennis cartoon around at the time TMNT came out, around 88-is and it was fairly popular for a syndicated show I suppose. Also Nickelodeon was spamming the 50s sitcom on weekends at the same time so Dennis stuff was still around then.
>>
>>152114489
Ted Turner kept certain things alive for decades.
Gilligan's Island, Addams Family, Andy Griffith Show, and Flintstones were just kept alive by Turner keeping those shows on daily syndication from the 1970s to the late 1990s. Up to the point that they just became standard cultural icons since they were always present on tv.
>>
>>152115912
So it was just Free Payola?
>>
>>152112804
Dennis and Woody had newer cartoons made at this time. Both were on a semi popular around 1990 when this might have been made. The Dennis one in the late 80s that ran for a few seasons on Saturday mornings until it got enough episodes to graduate to afternoon cartoons. The Woody Woodpecker show was a mainstay on WGN in the early 90s. Flintstones was always on in rerun format somewhere at any given time for a few decades.
>>
>>152115607
Oh fuck I completely forgot about this story, and I just read it last year, I am sorry.
>>
>>152112649
Hahaha.
>>
>>152115864
Yeah, Dennis stuff was well into like...early to mid 90s. The Flintstones where around just from reruns. Woody kept popping up in cartoon VHSs and kids shows that showed old cartoons.

>>152115838
Do you even realize that if you're someone in 1989 (the ad references the '88-'89 year so I assume it ends, what, summer 1989?) and you look at past decades for how well things would do in the future, you'd make the exact same call? Flintstones and Woody were doing well on TV for decades in reruns and Dennis, a relatively recent cartoon, was still getting rerun in syndication. TMNT was only two seasons in and people weren't sure if it was a fad or had staying power.

Nobody involved in that ad imagined the TV landscape would drastically shift in the 90s and 00s

Transformers, MOTU, and TMNT all weirdly were absent from the airwaves from the late 90's onward. Strange that they're some of the better lasting franchises compared to GI Joe or Thundercats, which did have airings in the 2000's

Also, Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry(/Kids) being rerun on TV too. It's not as weird of a call given the landcape.
Growing up around that and TMNT, the Simpsons ,etc coming out at that time was...enriching.

>>152116278
Exactly, people forget or don't know how much the way things aired on TV during the 50s to the 90s allowed a lot of things to stay in the public consciousness even if they were short-lived

Before 1978 Boomers and Gen Xers usually got introduced to Superman through the 50s George Reeves show getting rerun. Similarly the 1966 Batman show was what got people aware of Batman before the 1989 movie

For the same reason we keep getting Betty Boop and Popeye merch, it's just a background noise evergreen nostalgia brand.

It doesn't help that the last 2 major incarnations were misfires, even though I think both actually had some merit.

Woody Woodpecker got not 1 but 2 live action movies recently even if both are shit, TMNT got his last cartoon cancelled after only one season and the previous one was cancelled after 39 episodes, I think Woody won just by virtue of being a Goldern Age character, he is still very popular worldwide as well, you can claim this is just Paramount/Viacom poorly managing the turtles tho, but their last 2 cartoons were a huge failure
