When is okay to infantilize the source material?
>>
wtf are you talking about

the original the little mermaid tale is much darker than the disney film.

What does the source material have to do with it? You can do anything you want.

Worked for the Turtles.

Any time it produces a stellar product.
An adaptation doesn't have to be anything like its source material to be good because the reality is some stories would translate horribly to film if it was adapted word for word.
>>
>>152114736
In the case of Fairy Tales, you also have the fact that literally anyone can make a more accurate version as has been done with basically every Disney movie because it's public domain.
Hell, the most accurate adaptation of Frankenstein was a made for tv.

If you're trying to make something commercially successful, then yes.

The original was just Hans Christian Andersen coping over his homolust.

Lots of cases.

But maybe not the way the new Animal Farm is doing it. That looks like it’s gonna be shit. Honestly a bizarre looking idea for a movie.
>>

Fairy tales have been reworked through centuries considering they started as pagan myths but it must keep the essence of the story. Disney's Little Mermaid miss the point
>>
>>152114736
The disney version just letting the mermaid have the win at the end is honestly an improvement. Andersen’s takes that weird turn right at the end where, for no real reason, she becomes a guardian angel or whatever and then gets a punishment of an additional seven years of servitude every time a child cries or some shit. That’s weirder and sort of more of a downer than the versions where she just dissolves into foam.

Also, people overlook that Andersen’s story was ALREADY likely a dumbed down and kiddified retelling of an older medieval romance called Undine. Which iirc, was about a knight that fucked a water spirit, cheated on her, and then was drowned. People who talk about “dark originals of fairy tales” don’t even know the rabbit hole can go so much deeper.

These stories are constantly evolving. Go far enough back and sometimes you eventually find an “original” version that’s even more simplistic and tame than the disney movie you grew up on.

That sounds like a greek myth with sirens

Because Disney is not about to have the main hero die in despair at the end. Why would you think anyone wants to see that?
>>
>>152114610
...when the source fairy tale would make a shit movie that no one would want to see or pay money for. Should be kind of obvious really.

Do you want to make money?
If yes then make some changes to that the story works as a film and have the heroes have a happily ever after so kids will by some Happy Meals and theme park tickets.
>>
>>152118719
Yeah, it was probably further inspired by that.

We tried making Disney movies that match the tone of the source material. Everyone hated them.
>>
>>152119197
I never pictured the source material with such shitty drab muted colors.

why do people equate darkness with depth?

I hate what people call "hope".
>>
>>152119315
We don't have sincere enough well crafted stuff to teach people that cynicism isn't the same thing as maturity anymore.
>>
>>152119334
Speaking of hope. I’d sorta been hoping that the kiddy upbeat attitude was gonna wind up more like a front for this movie, and that it would at some point take a darker turn. That would sort of excuse it if they could pull it off. The trailer ending with a warning that the movie is not suggested for children under 11 supported that idea a little.

But this article certainly does not bode well for that hope.
>>
>>152114610
When you are aiming it at children and the normie audience.

I mean, who in the fuck wants to read the real stories behind Disney's bread and butter stories?
And look at wicked. Think anyone wants a 1:1 of the sincerely fucked up book.
Or for the wizard of OZ to really go into the stories in Oz? Hell no.
