Hey everyone, do you think this is a good design for a video game?
>>152119836She looks really cute. People will draw art of her paws which will attract more customers to your game too
>>152119923 Hahaha, you're right.
>>152119836First of all, what artstyle (or rather visual style) are you using for your game?
>>152120255 Well, to be honest, I've considered a pixel art style like Yoshi's Island or Celeste.
>>152119836First, why would you ask /co/ about /v/ game design?Second, it depends on what kind of game you're making and a lot more than just linework. You want the character to be clear to read on the screen and interesting to look at, which may mean specific colors or may mean more or less patterns. The general idea (catgirl with witch hat/dress) works just fine, but there may be game design parts which you'll want more complexity. If it's some sort of 3D game then perhaps a more distinctive tail, like a squirrel or skunk or lizard, would help people telling which direction she's facing at a glance. If you're talking about a VN or RPG, then you'd probably smaller details since players will mostly be looking at a still character portrait, rather than a full-body model.
>>152119836Cute.We can tell she's a caster with the pointy hat and dress. I'm assuming she's not wearing pants, which is acceptable when it comes to cat girls. The dress leaves just enough tease to see what's hidden underneath. If she wears cute panties, very cute. If not, you can take inspiration with Katt from the Breath of Fire series by having your OC go commando.I'm guessing her color scheme will be a black cat + dark purple combo?
>>152119836She looks like Katress from Palworld.
>>152120430 In fact, I had already done designs of her and the purple color suits her better.
>>152119836there should be a game over screen where she's trapped in a dungeon getting tickled haha that would be funny haha
>>152119836No. Horribly generic and thoroughly boring. Scrap it and try again.
>>152119836This has nothing to do with /co/.>>>/v/>>>/ic/
>>152120414 Well, I needed people's opinions to see what I could change in its design to make it more attractive.
>>152120294Are you going for a four/five negroes in a row set up? Or are you going for an ARPG similar to Seiken Densenstu/Mana series?Your character gives off that young apprentice vibe that doesn't know what she's doing and accidently sets your party member on fire at the initial encounter. Her outfit should become more detailed as the game goes on and she develops more.I say go to >>>/vr/ and study up on some vidya designs there.
>>152120691I think that furry-in-a-jacket works really well, so yes, I think it's a good design. The eyes seem pretty distinct so that helps the style stand out, although I'm sure I've seen it somewhere else as well. You don't NEED for a design to be more complicated than that, it's just that depending on the medium, some designs are going to work better than others. Hence, why I ask what kind of game you're planning. The game style is going to help decide how well the design fits what you'll need to be using. It'll also be best to get a basic game prototype and then put the character into it, to see what the design is lacking or what needs to be removed.
>>152120706 Thanks bro, your comment will be very helpful
>>152120769 The main idea is to create an RPG-type game
>>152120797Single protagonist or four-nigga-in-a-row? (or something different) If you're talking about a single protagonist RPG, then it seems more fitting that she's be picking up some fancy staff/weapon or amulet or something similar early on. A way to highlight "this is the main character" along with the plot macguffin to lead things on. If she's just one character of several to pick from, such as in Etrian Odyssey, then the design seems a bit plain but it gets the point across. She's clearly the witch and magic using character. If you mean something more like a 3D ARPG, then you'd want to consider how the character looks as a 3D model and when looking at her from all directions. You'd want a distinct appearance between the front and the back, maybe glowing tiger stripes on the tail or >>152120414 what I said here, so that it's clear when she's facing the camera compared to facing forward at an enemy.
>>152119836honestly? your style has sovl. would like to see more art if you have any.
>>152120691>>152120797If you're going for pixel art, you're going to have to make your character distinguishable on what class they are. From this image, can you tell me who are fighters, casters, healers? Which are male, which are female?
>>152120852 Well, I plan to have 3 more characters accompanying you.
>>152120890>I plan to have 3 more charactersThe character looks fine, then. It's going to depend on how much the four characters look together, in my opinion. As long as one is fairly simple, you'd probably want the other three to have relatively simple designs. I do like the style that >>152119836 has and it's clear what her role is, so good job with her design.Do you have any designs or concepts of the other three yet?
>>152120867 Okay, sure bro, I've already practiced this and other characters. If you want to see them, go to: @Xjimmich
>>152120958 There are two more characters, and I haven't thought about it yet, but I'll upload them to my Twitter soon, and here too.
>>152120979Looking at the twitter, I feel like there might be too many different colors on the character, especially if you plan on making a small pixelart sprite for them. Purple, blue, dark orange, light orange, blonde, and pink? It might make sense if the character is intended to be a big mix of colors, but I get the distinct impression that's not what you had in mind. Especially with the purple fur being such a prominent color, then perhaps make the hat and dress the same color, along with maybe some trim or bands on the clothing being a third color. (White and black are generally considered "free" colors so can be thrown in, too.)Otherwise, she'll stand out as a bit strange. And if all the protagonists are similarly colored, then they'll sort of start to blend together, colorwise. If Emma has purple fur and a blue hat/dress, with dark purple hair (or even light purple/lilac hair) then she'd easily be seen as the "purple/blue character" even with some purple bands or ribbons on her, and can contrast strongly with the other protagonist. She'll also be easier to highlight on an overhead map, since she'll be the purple one even if players don't clearly identify the figure. But if every character in the party is using the full color wheel with their clothing, then it gets harder to really seem much distinction. Maybe if that is the point - if the main characters are all multicolored and the enemies or NPCs are all monochrome - then this color works, but I'm guessing that wasn't your concept when you started picking her colors.
>>152121111 Yes, in fact, when I was painting the character I thought a lot about what color to use and I opted for purple, but Emma's design is still under development so maybe I'll change a few things.
>>152121142Also, while I say purple/blue I'm not saying that purple/blue is the only option. You can go with purple/orange or something else if it looks better. Purple/blue is just something that obviously works well together.
>>152119836If you're intending on other people to see this, then no. There's no color palette or enough poses to tell us what kind of a character she is. It looks like a cheerful cat witch kind of character? Look at official model sheets from your favorite shit and try to get your model sheet to match it.And like the other anons said, you need a model sheet that will help the modeler out, whether it's a 3d metroidvania like Pseudoregalia or if it's pixelated.
>>152121203 Okay bro, thanks a lot for your feedback, and if you're interested in the project, you can follow me on Twitter for more news and designs.
>>152121213 Sure, I did look for several examples, but the idea behind this drawing was simply to introduce the character. Later I would start improving it and drawing her in different poses and angles, but thanks for the advice, friend.
>>152121268The model sheets for Genshin Impact might also be worth looking at.
>>152121393 Go ahead, why not?
>>152120979Looking at your twitter, I think you had it correct with the first color scheme. I would try to keep it to at most, three main colors. In this case, it would be her hair, fur, and outfit. Add in some small accents in the detailed portrait (I added a red sash) but what this anon said >>152121111 her fur and outfit makes her the purple character.
>>152121754When did you paint it, haha? But yeah, like I said, I'll add more stuff, bro.
