This show was huge in 1999 and had tons of merchandise and it was basically Nick's biggest Nicktoon behind Rugrats, but in 2000, the show was cancelled after 68 episodes. Meanwhile, Wild Thornberrys (which premiered the same year) was renewed up to 84 episodes (later getting 7 more, making it 91 total) and got a theatrical movie. CatDog fell from popularity dramatically in 2000 with how Nick didn't renew it for more episodes
I remember them hyping up the movie for what felt like months then after that the show was basically over.Idk.
>>152120023Btw my favorite joke was when Cat and Dog (aka CatDog) were sharing a milkshake, and Dog was drinking the whole thing and when Cat said something like, 'hey I thought we were sharing', Dog says, get this, "My half is the bottom half"Lmao.
We still never know for years how does CatDog take a shit
>>152120050SpongeBob came out the year CatDog was at the peak of its popularity and CatDog still performed better than SpongeBob that year, yet in 2000, CatDog got cancelled while SpongeBob shortly after the CatDog cancelation became a phenomenon
>>152119995I haven't seen any of it, but I imagine there's only so much you can do with an impossible animal.
>>152120130It's almost like network politics were involved.A big blackpill is that most shows, animated or otherwise, get cancelled because the executive that greenlit the show and pushed for it leaves the network, and the executive that replaces them wants anything that doesn't have their fingerprints gone. Spongebob was good, but it was also more than a little bit of an industry plant. I remember during ATLA's run people hated Spongebob because it took up all the airtime.
>>152120242I'm surprised Fairly OddParents got lucky because it lasted for so many years, even though I swear I dont recall it having the craze CatDog had (like I don't recall Fairly OddParents having so much merch come out all at once or within just a few months)
>>152120278Fairly OddParents according to Butch, had someone pushing for it at all times which is how it lasted until 2017, despite it never reaching CatDog levels of popularity, let alone Rugrats and SpongeBob
>>152119995It was forced
>>152120278I think part of the reason is that Spongebob and FOP synergize well with a similar style of comedy but at the same time do not compete in premise.Meanwhile ATLA is this anime-esque action show that didn't fit what some people at Nickelodeon wanted the channel to be.
>>152119995I guess someone in charge at Nickelodeon hated CatDog. It still feels weird it got cancelled in 2000 after being nominated for favorite cartoon at the 1999 and 2000 Kids Choice Awards
>>152119995Nick, high afyer the successes of Ren and Stimpy, Rugrats, and Rocko, were 100% sure Catdog was going to be the next big thing. So they made a huge episode order upfront and ordered a shitton of merchandise for the show.Unfortunately, because the eoisode order was so high, production was notoriously rushed. So scripts weren't polished as much as they could be. This resulted in the show never reaching the highs of its predecessors. So while the show did just OK in ratings, it was never the runaway hit Nick expected it to be. That's shy it seemed to after such a huge presence and die out suddenly- Nick bever really pushed for more merch and tie-ins after that initial batch.Fun fact, Nick was so confident in Spongebob they almost repeated the same mistake. But I think it was Mr. Lawrence or someone who worked on Spongebob said to Nick, "Give us a lower episode order, and more tine to refine scripts so they can be the best they can be. Don't repeat what I went through with Catdog." And it paid off.
>>152119995Trick question; there never WAS a "CatDog craze."
>>152119995Because Jerkelodeon decided to promote Spongebutt Wetpants and not give Lola Caricola her own spinoff.
