Why people think that Gravity Falls is this some kind of magnum opus of the television?
>>152138727Maximum midwit appeal. Like if Rick & Morty had the decency to wrap up at two seasons.
>>152138727Anyone remember that poll where they prefered Gravity Falls over Gargoyles?
>>152138727>literally who post not related to /co/Go choke on a of thousand diseased dicks, OP
>>152138789It says Gravity Falls which is /co/ dumbass
>>152138727I think paradoxically it's cause Alex Hirsch loudly complains about how Disney censored him and interfered all the time. so when fans rewatch and they see something they don't like, they just can scapegoat Disney.
>>152138813It's about Stranger Things
>>152138727I swear most of Gravity Falls' problems would be non-existent if they weren't pretentious and just settled on being a weird comedy show.
Hirsch did just enough to bait people into thinking it was better than it is.
>>152138727A thing that helped Gravity Falls is that it was episodes 22-minutes long with high quality animation, which allowed people to take it more seriously.Other shows from that era (think Adventure Time or Steven Universe, that also has big fandoms) were only 11-minutes long and the quality of animation was more noticeably subpar.
>>152138727A show can be as uninspired and juvenile and even as mostly episodic as it can be, as long as you imply there is “lore” and “mystery” that is deeper than it actually if people place it as more mature and higher quality then it is Gravity Falls is nowhere near as mature or clever as Troy or Motorcity or even Wander from the era, it is not that great compared to them at all. But it does have the edge to normalfags that it has mystery lore. You can make educational shows seem sophisticated to the people with this cheat
>>152138789>>152139183How are you still this retarded?
>>152139318Ask OP
>>152139024I know Disney is probably the hardest network to work on, but the way Alex Hirsch has trashtalked Disney always rubbed me the wrong way. Disney financed your show!
>>152138727It stuck the landing, unlike Stranger Things which even turbo midwits are realizing is dogshit just like Game of Thrones.
>>152138727Because it's babby's first mystery show, and they were babbys at the time.
>>152139593What kind of boomer ass opinion is this. >you can't criticize your former boss!Fuck off retard
>>152139608Haven't watched since season 2.What happened?
>>152138727Because these people’s only reference point is cartoons.
Over The Garden Wall mogs Grabba Deez Balls
>>152139627basically nothing but a bunch of plot threads that go nowhere, characters being dumbed down, constantly explaining what they're doing every 3 minutes. the last season is by far the worst and it doesn't even look good, the epic final fight looks worse and is shorter than the mall fight at the end of season 2 ST feels like every issue MCU movies have 10x
>>152138727They both had toothless saccharine endings with minimal in-story consequences though.
>>152138727I thought it was pretty good but the finale was a letdown
>>152139315this, you can also fool them with good art direction + animation, see: spiderverse
>>152138727it's good but it's not great. It's downfall was towards the ending
>>152139593It's so one-sided and comes off as arrogant because Alex is assuming his initial idea will always be better.
>>152138727Why can’t you learn English? You have all the tools of the modern era, yet you still type like a caveman.
>>152139608>It stuck the landingIt really didn't, the finale is really boring and underwhelming in retrospect>Bill "wins" but all he does is dawdle and do wacky stuff instead of killing everyone instantly >Bill stops using his far reaching omnipotent powers so he could chase the twins on foot >the series-long mystery is irrelevant, Bill is defeated by cartoony logic that was never a factor before>all the setup for the finale is introduced in the finale itself rather than being built up>zero permanent consequences or status quo changes compared to pre-finale It's a really really meh ending
Gravity Falls is beloved because every other cartoon shat the bed even harder making Gravity Falls look better by comparison.
>>152138727Those guys probably get off to videos like the Philosophy/Politics of Adventure time or Boss baby. That being say, GF was fine as an X Files for kids. Way better then ST.
Gravity falls is held back by childrens show writing and pure beanmouth artstyleIts only regarded as a classic because of Wendy porn
>>152140125>Dipper must be permanently attached to his bitch sister's side instead of pursuing his own life and dreams because she has abandonment issues
I don't want to talk about Stranger's Things on /co/. Have the fucking decency to wait until the toon series premieres.
>>152138782>It's real
It was more like a Cartoon Network original than a Disney toon humour wise
>>152138727lol gravity flops was full of fillers and then a rushed ending because they couldn't afford to make 3 seasons
>>152138727They grew up with it and Toon Twitter-Bsky enforces no criticism of it to help current DTVA/etc careers.
>>152141038Kick Buttowski feels a lot more CN than Gravity Falls does. Still amazed at what that show managed to get away with, especially considering Disney's very strict S&P.
>>152140266If people wanted to talk about Stranger Things on /co/ there's already comics
>>152141152>Still amazed at what that show managed to get away withIt was made for Disney XD, the attempt of Disney to appeal the boy demographic of Disney channel
Making it up as you go along can work, as evident by Venture Brothers. People just actually need writing chops and a good writing partner to make it work. Vince Gilligan admits that most shit in Breaking Bad was thought up as they were writing the season, but him and his team had such a solid pipeline for when they wrote that it felt seamless.
>>152140125>Mabel literally almost brings about the apocalypse>Zero consequences, gets everything she wanted in the end.Yeah, the ending was really bad and obviously rushed.
Because they watched it when they were a teenager and it was the first exposure to any kind of serious plot in animation.
>>152139593Alex Hirsch's criticisms of Disney always rang hollow because he was never screwed over by Disney the way so many other creators were.He ended his show on his terms and left, then left. It's not even that I disagree with him, but it always felt like he was joining a bandwagon than being sincere, especially when he has more reason to be mad at Netflix than Disney.
>>152138727Gravity Falls had a lot of attention to detail and secrets littered throughout every episode that cleverly distract the audience from the absolutely cringe inducing routine shenanigans that Dipper and Mabel get up to. Vast majority of episodes are a chore to sit through, but because the show constantly hints that something deeper is about to be revealed if only they watch more to find out, the problems get swept under the rug and forgotten. The show’s appeal to mystery is spellbinding in a very literal fashion where every journal revelation, cameo from background events of other episodes, and foreshadowing objects serve as a hypnosis watch to make everyone ignore the fact they just watched Dipper spill his spaghetti and awkwardly simp over a redhead after Mabel goes another failed thot adventure for the millionth time.
>>152139623What Alex does is way more than criticize. When people like CH Greenblatt shittalk Nickelodeon, you can at least see where it's coming from. He helped write some of the best Spongebob episodes, then watched the decline of the network to the point that they fucked over his own show and refused to communicate with him later on despite being so open doors while Harvey Beaks was in production. He also had to be witness to actual scummy exec behavior like pic related.By contrast, Hirsch got a hit show at a young age, got to end the show on his own terms, helped push his friends so their shows could get greenlit, and was still allowed back at Disney to work on future GF projects despite going out of his way to burn bridges. Alex burning himself out in the first season to the point where he wanted to quit was his fault, not Disney's. They did not have unreasonable demands, Alex was merely a perfectionist. Even when Alex released that S&P notes video in an attempt to make them look retarded, a bunch of showrunners (Including ones who also worked on Disney shows) came out and said, "This is standard for any show and very easy to work around. These weren't horrible notes at all. You gotta listen to your boss once in awhile, man". Alex has this entirely warped view for how his time at Disney was and the more you learn about the production of GF, the more you realize it was 85% self-inflicted. Nobody is denying that Disney can be a pain to work for because of how corporate they are, but GF just does not feel like an example of that.
>>152141179Even still, the style of humor in Kick is VERY unlike Disney. You'd be forgiven for thinking it was a CN show in the vein of Dexter's Lab or My Gym Partner's a Monkey, particularly with all the sexually suggestive jokes and how often Kick is shown bare-butt naked.
I'm new here and feel like this is the best place to ask; does this place have some sort of essentials list of animation and cartoons? If not then name some that can be considered to be some kind of magnum opus.
>>152141372Back in the day there were some tumblr blogs that collected a few images of /co/ recommendation lists, if you search that up you'll find a good few that go up to the mid 10s. A lot of tastes have changed from the /co/ that made those lists to current /co/, but you're bound to find some good ones. The more consistently good lists are the comic recommendation lists since those usually focus on organizing runs.
>>152141402https://comraderecs.tumblr.com/post/17325351458/cartoon-recommendationsfound the one I was thinking of, this should give you a few good places to start
>>152141345It almost feels like there's an ego thing going on. >"I'm an artist! Why am I not misunderstood, tortured, and standing up to the man!?"
>>152141402>>152141416Thanks
>>152141345No wonder why nobody wants to buy Alvin & The Chipmunks
>>152140233Pinecest won
>>152138727Stranger Things appeals to the same demographic as Gravity Falls.
>>152139623
>>152142336>not your money>not your equipment>not your network>not your studio>not your staffwhat did incel mean by this?
>>152142336That's the thing, dozens of people at DTVA also had that and went on to make garbage
>>152142389Hi, Alex.
>>152138727Unironically why hasnt hirsch made another show since? Wasnt he supposed to do something for netflix?
