Why did popular comic strips die out? Even if newspapers are gone, they could have taken up a new life online. Sure they may still be around but gone are the days where we'd see one become a phenomenon like Peanuts, Calvin & Hobbs or Garfield
>>152142077Too many options
>>152142077Crazy to believe it's still the art form with the most job security.
>>152142077This documentary might give some insight. The syndicated cartoonists are vehemently opposed to doing anything but drawing their strips, and the webcartoonists refuse to engage with “the man” to further their careers and continue their hyperniche goofball shit. To succeed now I think you have to be the rare person who can occupy the exact middle ground between those positions.
>>152142077>>152142678 gave some reasons but I'll also add that the people in newspaper comics would see doing webcomics as a step down in the sense that they're getting less money than they did before, for various reasons. Someone who got into comics through doing webcomics would not see this because everything would seem like a step up from where they startedAs much as Scott Adams was controversial, he correctly decided to put his comic up online for free in 1995 which brought in more attention. On the other hand that was a very different time, and a very different internet compared to now.
>>152142678This is a really good documentary. Also, almost every cartoonist that is syndicated right now, noteworthy ones especially, happened pre-internet, where having your identity tied to your work wasn't necessary. The big ones got constantly interviewed and went on talk shows; Jim Davis, Cathy, Schulz, etc. Those types of opportunities don't happen anymore.
>>152142077Most strips suck.
>>152142441You can just inherit a long running comic when the author dies it’s wild
50s peanuts had so much more soul
>>152144085That depends on who owns the comic when the creator dies. Most retire off the comic and pass it off, like NuHeart. Otherwise most strips are handled by family of the creator.
>>152142077webcomics suck actually?
>>152142678Haha! He's NAKED!

>>152144421The most popular online comics are strips though. And there's more of them. Of course newspapers are dead. But back when newspapers were popular there was only a handful of comics. Whatever. This is a black pill thread right?
