The key difference between movie Sonic and game Sonic has always been that movie Sonic experienced grief his entire life and how he's dealt with it. It colors his entire interactions with Shadow in a really meaningful way. Every interaction he has with Shadow early in the movie is him just trying to talk, relate to, and connect with Shadow, because he knows exactly what it's like to lose someone you care about. But then all that flips when Shadow almost kills Tom, and Sonic is suddenly back in that traumatized headspace he had as a kid, but now, he has godlike power to strike back and make whoever hurt him hurt ten times worse. So we get as close as we're probably going to get to evil Super Sonic in the movie (and we get a great scene where KNUCKLES is the mature, wise one) before Sonic snaps out of it.And then the scene where Sonic and Shadow finally connect is actually a great message for kids on grief. No. The pain you feel when you lose someone never goes away. But neither does the love, and unlike the pain, love can keep growing, even after someone is gone.It may not be high cinema, but it IS solid storytelling.
