Of all the characters to return the only ones that actually needed to be back were Palpatine, Yoda, Anakin, Obi-wan and Uncle Owen. The droids had no reason to be among the cast and Chewbacca being a cameo was just nostalgia baiting. Oddly enough Tarkin had a minor sode role despite actually being someone it wouldn't have hurt to have return.

For one, it could be assumed that since the Skywalker saga ended, they're not beholden to center the story exclusively on them, so they could do an adaptation of NJO with the Jedi order as a whole as the protagonists. Even in a world where the sequels were good, I still think that should've been the route. The Vong storyline can make for a good trilogy, but eps. VII-IX shouldn't have been about them since you have to make one more personal story for the Skywalker family before doing that.

I'm pretty confident that the next "trilogy" is actually going to be a full saga in time with as many episodes as the skywalkers, so the question is whether or not the grysks could handle being the antagonists of that much content. Personally for me, I think they are too out there for most Star Wars fans.

I have read Quinlan Vos - Jedi in Darkness omnibus. That's 500 pages of comic books about Quinlan Vos. I can't describe Quinlan Vos' personality, I can't name any of his distinctive character traits that don't involve his looks, his special psychometry ability, or his occupation. He is sometimes angry and tense, but otherwise no different from any generic prequel Jedi. He was no different from Mace Windu. Or Tholme. They are all written the same: generic Jedi, who sometimes dump generic Jedi wisdom. The only time he was kinda fun was in that arc where he was on Dathomir. Villie the devaronian was the best character. So far, I much prefer animated Vos. He was memorable, fun, and had a fucking personality.
