How would (You) fix Spawn as a concept?

Oh boy now I finally have an excuse to post my Spawntism (Spawn + Autism, get it?)
>instead of a government spook (teehee) Al Simmons is a corrupt cop who carries out hits for corrupt police chief Jason Wynn. His partner is Jessica Priest, equally corrupt, having an affair with Al
>Al is married to Wanda but is abusive. He genuinely loves her but he’s a bad guy
>Internal affairs guys Sam and Twitch offer Al a deal to rat out Wynn in exchange for witness protection for him and Wanda
>Wynn catches wind and has Priest kill Al
>as Al is dying his last thoughts are of his wife. He says he just wants to see Wanda again. A voice in the dark asks “what would you give?” Al answers “anything”
>Al is returned to earth as a hellspawn, an agent of the devil who does the devil’s bidding on earth and harvests souls for Hell
>heaven and hell have a treaty where any being who was born in heaven or hell are not to interfere with earth
>hell gets around this treaty by creating Hellspawn
>Al’s necroplasmic body is held together with black magic which he can tap into to cast spells
>but the more spells he casts the less magic he has to stay alive
>his body is hella weak so he’s given the carapace and the shroud (his costume) to protect his weak body
<continued>
>>
>>152156096
<continued>
>Al goes to see Wanda and she’s sees happy and remarried with a child
>Al remembers how abusive he was to Wanda and has a break down
>Clown, a native of Hell sent to keep Spawn in line, taunts Spawn by telling him Wanda prayed and thanked God when Al was killed
>Al decides he’s going to use his second life to be a better man and to help people rather than hurt
>however Al is a bad man and even when he’s doing good he’s doing bad
>Al as a super hero is essentially Jason Voorhees only instead of killing horny teens he kills murderers and rapists
>the devil doesn’t really care because Al’s harvesting souls like he was sent to earth to do
That’s all I’ve got. Someone pls respond I put a lot of thought into this

Hi, Todd, happy about Gaiman’s situation?
>>
>>152156135
I don't like the abusive spin, makes it easier for her to forget about him instead of seeing her still thinking about him years on.
Also if he becomes edgy Punisher that makes him no longer really stand out. Spawn's origin never felt like what was wrong with the story. It was how unmanaged and carefree it is. Once you get through enough of it, you notice how played out everything is. Todd trying out other Spawns and going through their journeys has been fun. I remember Medieval Spawn was cool.

I hate you and I refuse to read any further.
Kidding
I like the cop angle I like a more outwardly openly bad Al Simmons. I don't like bad for bads sake. I think how I would tackle it is. Al was ex military and is a tough cop, an unfair cop. But not dirty, not "on the take". Priest is. They're partners but not friends and their relationship is largely based on mutual destruction. This frustrates Al and he take it out on Wanda or it causes the tension between them. Terry is a family friend maybe working in the DA's office, Maybe Wanda works in the DA's office as well. He's the one that get Sam and Twitch to give Al a deal.

When Spawn returns Wanda and Terry and the kid like you said but Terry should be mayor by now. When he was alive he was always jealous of Terry, assumed him and Wanda were having an afair them being together now confirms it. He still loves Wanda and want to hurt Terry but Terry actually being a decent mayor is in the crosshairs of organized crime and all the other fucked up corruption in the city. And Al gets pulled into this by trying to protect Wanda. And then like you sat because Al is Al and has this specific way of handling things, Him becoming a hero is like Jason Vorhees or a serial killing vigilante. He has the suit and cape but also the detective skills from his old life.

I think to cause conflict with Malbolgia and Clown he has to be stopped or talked to. Terry, Sam and Twitch should catch onto him fairly early and convince him not to kill and work with police amd do good. Cogliostro shows up around here. And this causes conflict with Clown/Violator and the larger hell plot expands from here.

I dig it, fleshes out my original post into a more cohesive narrative. We should pitch to Todd, maybe get an Absolute or Ultimate version of Spawn going.

>ruins the best part (supernatural mixing with tacticool) and goes back to "muh cawps" like it's a Law & Order comic
>BLACKED in the first sentence
Never post again.

1. Al goes on heavy metal adventures with his brother Gene
2. Comic now published by IDW
3. Al white now for some reason
4. Everyone singing issue

Go full horror with a thin superhero veneer. His hellskin/symbiote looks like that because he grew up on superhero stuff and the costume mutated into that look and feeds into his hero ideology pushing him to become more and more monsterous corrupting him till he becomes a real hellspawn.
He's fighting a losing battle and the suit dangles "eating evil people to give himself more life and time on earth" in front of him.

Al Simmons is not a good man. Not on any level but the idea of being good despite being objectively a bad person is a failing that many evil people have.

But he does play into the ego trip of being a hero and falls hard many places. Make it so that the costume messes with his memories so he doesn't fully realize who he was and that he's not some hero who was betrayed by dark forces.

I don't like Al being a cop instead of a soldier. The analog of him being in soldier in life and being so recognized makes him a good candidate for a soldier in hell's army works too well. A cop just isn't the same, maybe swat is close.
Plus him using weapons instead of his powers because he's ultimately still a jarhead and naturally handles ammo better than magic is a cool angle. Especially if his powers are limited or traceable with his
I think it was the Spawn cartoon where at one point it's recognized that Spawn is using Al's tactics and it's a cool bit of storytelling.
