He was based on his dad, who was very strict and egotistical and yet at the same time was sort of an influence on him.

George was arguably at his best in R&S cause the show is very much self-aware with how much of a dick he is and thus the few episodes that featured him tended to focus more on the titular characters dealing with him than John shilling him.
