Melanie's a way more interesting, dynamic and better love interesting than the boring-ass cold fish that is Dana. Dana is cute but boring as shit. Melanie isn't even as dicey as Bruce & Selina, Melanie would be a good girl if her family weren't a gang of thieves.

The production reason is that they wanted to do a Romeo and Juliet story without a build up. X-Men did it with Gambit.
