I've been thinking and I don't think Pomni is actually special in her dynamic with Jax, and I don't think she's special to him (before a funnybunny shipper comes for me, that doesn't mean I think that they don't care about each other). I think that their friendship says more about Jax's character than it suggests that there's something unique about Pomni. There isn't. Jax has had friends in the past. It's implied he and Ragatha used to get along to an extent. He's capable of forming bonds and has done so before Pomni showed up. What it says is that Jax is lonely and would've tried to form a bond with anyone he hadn't already burned bridges with, which goes against the image he tries to present.

I think part of the Jax Pomni dynamic is that Jax has been in this self destructive spiral for years, and he's reaching the end. On some level he wants to have friends again, but he's already set himself up as the asshole to everyone around him. The death of Kaufmo, which caused the usually smiling Jax shock and anger, might have triggered this as well. Pomni wasn't already burned out on his lashing out, so he could actually talk to her. But he freaked out and got scared, and lashed out at her too, now he's embarrassed and avoiding her because he wants to talk to her and be friends, but doesn't know how.The other characters notice this change in Episode 6 and 7, but Zooble especially isn't willing to let Jax move past it, and Ragatha literally tried to sabotage Jax and Pomni's friendship.
