I just need to rant. Why can't Hollywood just let Doom be Doom? I haven't watched the MCU since before Civil War. I don't give a fuck about it, but my social media feed is magically flooded with all these normies praising Iron Man as Doctor Doom... which is fucking retarded. It really is.Doom is the main villain of Marvel, pratically, the company was built on him in the early days. He has bigger mythos than most heroes at this point. Tons of content, tons of character and very established. He's not hard to fuck up -- yet every "adaption" Hollywood puts out just royally fucks him up and now Marvel is saying he's been Tony Stark all along (like Trask?)... This is just retarded. It's why I boycott the MCU.
>>152184404The more traits a character has the longer it takes to explain them and the more care that needs to be taken to make it all fit. Comic Doctor Doom has had over 50 years to develop, a film version gets 2.5 hours max.
>>152184436It's not hard to do, he's a guy from a Eastern European who used to be friends with Reed Richards, got a tragic accident that messed his face and his mind up and he went back to his own country, used his science and magic knowledge to take over and became a dictator. Not that hard. Can be explained in 15 minutes in the beginning.
>>152184497>used his science and magic knowledgeThat's the tricky part, because both come with an audience assumption requiring time to master.
>>152184532>That's the tricky part, because both come with an audience assumption requiring time to master. Not the anon you're replying to, but that's just an excuse. >Doom: "I've mastered both science and magic!" >Reed: "That would take multiple lifetimes!" >Doom: "Not for Doom." Boom explained. And if some braindead producer was still that hung up on it, then just focus on one more than the other. He's a simple concept. You don't need to mess with the premise. But the real reason Hollywood always screws up Dr. Doom and half the other characters from cape comics is that they always feel this stupid need to come up with a "fresh new take" to generate buzz, when in reality, the only fresh take anyone wants is being true to the source material.
>>152184583>when in reality, the only fresh take anyone wants is being true to the source material.Well put. You'd think they'd learn.
>>152184436That excuse is trotted out too often for adaptations. You can describe Dr. Doom pretty easily honestly. Hates Reed, super genius, massively massively egotistic and petty, master of magic and engineering, despot ruler of Latveria which is Romania or whatever. Is that so difficult to put on-screen?You don't *need* to run through his entire backstory and you can just allude to his underlying motivations. Frankly I think running through his backstory actually tends to undercut the character if it's not done in the right way. Just hinting that he wants to save his mother from super Satan is good enough.
>>152184497You're skipping the stuff with his parents, Valeria, the discrimination at home, and the monks, to name a few things. The thing is, yes, you can just give a fifteen minute info dump about his dad freezing to death and regularly fighting the devil, but it's absurd. It's telling the audience there was this awesome backstory, but we're gonna skip it so he can hurry up and get killed in the next movie or so. If you want to do Doom justice, adapt the Books of Doom as a movie or something.
>>152184583You could do it entirely without dialogue just by referencing both Iron Man and Strange in Doom's first appearance. Something like Doom striding down a corridor while his armor equips itself to him, then the cape and tunic manifest from the gold button buckle things on his chest, he makes a gesture with his hand and summons the teleport portal but green instead, he steps through on to a balcony on the castle to everyone in Doomstadt chanting his name
>>152184723You don't have to give a dismissive summary of his entire background. You can just reveal the parts relative to the story and leave it to be delved into later. That's extremely normal for stories. Sometimes the character's background hasn't even been completely written yet! Was Doom's fully formed in his first comic appearance?
>>152184404Because fuck comic books and fuck everyone who likes them. Get a real hobby you fucking nerds.
>>152184809That would work for, say, a TV series, but movies are a different animal. The story has to be able to stand on its own in a single entry. In one movie, you have to say "here's Doom, this is his deal" and accept that as a foundation. You have to frontload, among other things, his motivation. Fundamental things like his childhood and the deal with his mother have to be in the first entry or not at all; you can't just say he's an asshole in the first movie and then tell the audience why in the second.
>>152184802>Riri spends a whole show building her spell-punk magitech Iron Man suit>Doom walks up with better and asks why this child is pretending to be him
>>152184899I fundamentally disagree. We didn't know Vito Corleone's background, the reason he turned to crime, or how he became a Mafia leader until Godfather Part II.
A Doom movie probably could have been done. Just make the present dictator of Latveria the villain and make him employ a couple of supervillains as muscles
>>152185295Would've been better than they're stupid idea of doing movies about the Spiderman villains the wider public doesn't give a shit about at least. Kraven and Morbius. Really.
