>CGI movie based on one of the most popular cartoons of all time>Will just barely outgross the first film (not accounting for 20 years of inflation)>May not even gross half of the second oneWhat went wrong?
>>152192934Not enough Sandy in a swimsuit with a more-humanoid body?
>>152192934who the fuck asked for ice spice in spongebob
>>152192934>What went wrong?Poor tone deaf, annoying marketing and at the same time suffered from pearl clutching losers complaining about Ice Spice's inclusion being too sexual for a kids film.I saw it in theaters, wasn't even that bad. Had some kawaii moments between the Sponge and Mr. Krabs.
>>152192934I saw a single frame of the ice spice fish and decided i didn't even want to steal the fucking movie
I liked it...
>>152192934Poisoned the well with too many midtier direct to streaming films. Paramount needs to just bite the bullet and go back to 2D movies if these things are gonna underperform anyways, and don't give me the "2D is too expensive" meme.
sponge is stale. let it die. it's time for him to just be a legacy mascot
>>152192934Avatar 3>but no one watched avatar 3That's a different issue.
>>152192934No matter how hard the media's tried to force her down people's throats, people don't actually like Ice Spice at all. And they used her as a focal point for marketing. Her first album was a colossal failure despite them forcing her into multiple features and even trying to pretend she was close friends with fucking Taylor Swift, as if anyone believed that. Nobody gives a shit about her and making the marketing focused around her was a tremendous mistake. In fact she's barely even been in anything since her first album flopped which makes me think this was a long-term contractual thing.
>>152192934can't milk the cow forever
>>152193154And she is such a strange, completely out of touch choice for a kids movie. Yeah, let's have the trash chick who twerks everywhere make music for the kids film. and the dress she wore for the premiere speaks for itself
>>152193154>In fact she's barely even been in anything since her first album flopped which makes me think this was a long-term contractual thing.I'm willing to bet it was this. "Dude we should market Spongebob with a rapper that's most known for rapping about literal shit". Reeks of corporate fuckery.
>>152192934Regardless of what people thought of this movie, it was absolutely destined to fail.1. It released shortly after Zootopia 2, which is the highest grossing animated film of all time and is still killing it in theaters2. It released the same day as Avatar, which means that nobody wanted to bring their kid out to see SpongeBob and then it's Christmas and people aren't going to theaters until after New Years3. It was the last film produced by Paramount before and during its merger with Skydance4. Due to the merger, Paramount laid off hundreds of people including their marketing team. This meant that they had to lean into that Ice Spice cameo and outsource marketing to some dogshit company who re-used the same 5 images of the characters over 1000x5. Netflix released 2 very mediocre SpongeBob movies in the same year, which makes seeing a new "SpongeBob movie" far less special when you can watch them on streaming. A dumb, cynical move made by higher ups at Nickelodeon and Paramount probably when they were fattening up the studio to appear "busy" when selling to Skydance. Brian Robbins who singlehandedly finished killing Nickelodeon by ruining every franchise that they owned just as he was on his way out.Like or hate this film, it was never going to succeed as good as any prior SpongeBob movies just due to factors outside of its control. Also, normal people don't have the same opinions of cartoon fanatics and the Ice Spice promotion actually did help even if it was shit.
>>152192934We got two of these within the last year. Spongebob movies aren't special any more.
>>152193359>Zootopia 2 is the highest grossing animated film of all timeNot to belittle your overall point. But I consistently hear this about what feels like every single moderately successful new animated film that comes out. I’ve decided inflation makes the achievement functionally meaningless.
>>152193318>>152193352Remember this is the same company that had hyped special with David Bowie as the star only for him not to sing.
>>152193409When you adjust for inflation Snow White is still the highest-performing animated film of all time and Gone with the Wind is still the highest-performing movie period. Saying "the highest-grossing X" is just a marketing stunt because they know most people won't take inflation into account.
>>152193451how dare you remind me of that fuckass boring specialman so many specials were absolute stinkers
>>152193556>man so many specials were absolute stinkersYou're telling me Best Day Ever, The Sponge who could fly and my favorite Spongebob whopants were shit. The last especially was fucking retarded from the bubble popping gang (seriously that was fucking gay) to all of Spongebob's friends treating him like shit and acting saying sorry is going to fix jack.
>>152192934Its a direct to DVD movie slapped onto the big screen and they shoehorned Mark Hamill and Ice Slut into the movie at the last second, The shitty marketing for the movie threw off parents while at the same time having nothing to really offer, nothing that appeals to people of all ages like the show was in its prime or the first movie, The animation looks as stellar as something like Paw Patrol, It only makes me wonder if they're trying to transition SpongeBob into a CG show as a way to cut corners.
>thread made me remember kamp koral was supposed to be a thinglol i haven't seen anyone mention that ever again
>>152192934Spongebob big guy pants ok
>>152193022Me
>>152192934Who was seriously asking for a new CG Spongebob movie in 2025? Who is asking for new Spongebob in general?
>>152193359>which is the highest grossing animated film of all timeAhem you forgot the actual kings (ne zha 2)
>>152193377I hear the Plankton movie was decent
>>152193292Paramount will find a way, don't you ever doubt their sinister ways...
>>152193352Kids like poop, right?
