Say what you want about John K but at least he delivered his Kickstarter project even if people think is shit, Butch never delivered Oaxis despite getting the money he asked for and Atoms never delivered his movie because he was a retard who didn't do research over that union bullshit
>>
>>152194707
I'm considering the possibility some people will make a big deal about going so they can produce a critique video calling it a scam or some other form of content bashing Butch which will give it enough traction to be a modest success.

>Get industry advice from people who haven't been able to land a industry job in the past 4 years or longer!

No thanks, outdated info you can already find for free online. The western industry is fucked and rapidly changing, very little about what they have to say will apply to the current/future job market. There is a reason why you're seeing a bunch of industry vets trying to sell "advice" online now, because they aren't finding work either.

If you're someone seriously trying to get a start somewhere right now your only real options is to aim low and get work on smaller indie projects. You really can't get into this field anymore with the idea it will be a living wage when starting out.
>>
>>152194707
His ideas later in his career is pretty bland, he's gotten worse at drawing, he has a bunch of controversies like tracing for commissions and rip-off Kickstarters, but he clearly knows how to wine and dine executives and producers to get a show off the ground. If someone could teach how to talk to executives and how to verbally sell your idea, almost like a speech class but for a specific purpose, I think that'd be much more beneficial than yet another, "I'll comment on your pitch bible" lecture.

Like when people say, "Let's network with professionals!". The fuck does that mean, exactly? Walk up to them and start talking about cartoons? How do you approach total strangers and not make it totally obvious you're trying to sell shit to them or that you're only talking to them because you want something? That's the part of the industry that never feels clarified.

Now that I think about it. It's not really an industry convention because it fails to offer the most significant thing those conventions are for. Networking opportunity.
Butch burned a lot of bridges on his way out from Nickelodeon and has almost no connection to the "new guard" of showrunners who would be who you'd gun for for a good internship which is objectively what the actual driven people looking for a spot in the industry would be after over simple advice.
It's worthless.

I don't really get why he's been doing this for like a decade now. He has two pretty successful shows and was pretty well known based off of them alone. Why not just peacefully retire instead of making/doing shit no one wants to see?

>How do you approach total strangers and not make it totally obvious you're trying to sell shit to them or that you're only talking to them because you want something? That's the part of the industry that never feels clarified.
It's been clarified plenty on /co/, but anons never want to hear it. I've personally outlined the process several times.

First, you don't walk into a room with the intent to get anything out of people or to pitch an idea to someone. People don't like feeling used and they can smell that shit a mile away. "Networking" is just a fancy word for making friends with people in your field. When you go to professional events, you can take a little comfort knowing that pretty much everyone is there with the same mindset - to meet people. Breaking the ice with someone can feel awkward, but it doesn't take much. You can ask someone what they're drinking, complement something they're wearing, ask a question in relation to the event, ("so what do you think the chances are they'll pass some food around later on?") or even just say "Hey! I don't think I've met you." <offer hand shake and name>. From there it's the same old shit. While you *can* jump right into what they do, sometimes making small chit chat is a good idea first to warm up the conversation. People usually play along. They WANT to talk to you, so if you do the work of helping to get the conversation going, most people will feel relieved. If they're being super cold and mostly unresponsive, just politely taper the conversation and move on. You're not a failure, they're being a dick.

The idea of someone not wanting to talk to you can feel like a nightmare, but most of the time people will be down to make some polite chit chat.
Eventually you can get around to talking about what they do and what you do. It's always best to ask questions and let someone talk about themselves. If they're socially adept, they'll toss the conversation back and ask you questions as well, but you don't want to be the person who talks too much about themselves. If you want, once someone has gone on for a bit, you can take the opportunity to relate something that they said to yourself as well so you can slip in what you do. "Oh man, that workload sounds ROUGH. The last project I worked on was kind of like that. I'm an animator and I was working on..." or whatever. Try to keep tabs on how long you're talking and if you find yourself going on for a bit, make sure to turn the conversation back. You don't need to get your whole resume out there or anything. This is all about first impressions, so just be friendly and leave a good impression.

The conversation will end at some point. If you don't exchange info, it's okay. You'll end up seeing the same people at events over and over again, so you want them to remember that they've seen your face and had a nice conversation. The next time you see them, you'll have an excuse to walk up to them, remind them of when you last saw them, and ask them what's new.

If the conversation seems to go really well, you might want to exchange business cards or social media links so you can stay in touch. Make sure to have your shit ready. Business cards used to be key (and it's still a good idea to have a nice one), but a lot of times people will just exchange instagram usernames. Use a QR code or get them to type it into your phone directly.
