For all of Stephen's faults, his abuse of Butters mostly takes the form of yelling at him for misunderstandings that could easily be resolved by being calm and looking for any random excuses to ground him. He still does more fucked up shit like attempt to sell his son to a celebrity, try to feed him a corpse an attempt to cover up his attempted murder but this seems to happen more because he's too stupid to understand what's going on. The only time he laid his hands on him was when Cartman tricked him into thinking Butters was actually being a brat (not that it was actually appropriate).Clay literally beats his son as often as he can because he thinks it's an expression of love and gives advice he knows is terrible and might lead to Orel being even worse. Literally making excuses for getting drunk and crippling Orel is probably about the worst thing someone can do to their own child.
Stephen's done some degenerate shit, but Clay is worse, and it's not even a contest.

i watched season 1 and a few episodes of season 2 years ago and got back into the series again recently. i totally love it now and am almost finished with season 3, sorry to see it end but i feel like they did a good job concluding every arc in the final season?certainly a comfort show for me
