Ftfy
Capeshit to this day lives in the shadow of Watchmen, every writer ever since had tried to ape it in some way and is still seeking that validation from literature critics

i officially clasify the 2000's as the OW THE EDGE age
It wasnt EXTREME like the 90's it was truly a test by publishers to see what they could get away with and how much controversial bullshit they could shove into a book
>The 9/11 Marvel Comics
>Dr Light raping Sue Dibney
>Daredevil etching Bullseyes logo on his forehead
>all of Civil War and its cheap Bush administration commentary
>The Boys
>Crossed
>Preacher
>all of Garth Ennis
>Marvel MAX
>The entire Ultimate comics line except Spider-man, then later on Ultimatum
>Old Man Logan
>Wanted
>RED
>The Unfunnies
>again, everything by Mark Millar
>Invinsible (good story but it really went over the top with the gore)
It was the era of shock value over good storytelling
>>
>>152197900
The names were originally taken from concept of the greek ages of man. Marvel was trying to push the Heroic Age for a while but not only did it not catch, nothing happened. After that is the Iron Age.
>>
>bronze age to 1990
Wrong
>>
>>152197900
shouldn't the modern age get a new name and we call 2020s-2040s+ the modern age?
>>
>>152197900
its called pre-collapse(of the medium) or creatively bankrupt age. At least in terms of the big 2/capshit/murican comics

>Inst it time the modern age gets a official name and cutoff date?
Here is you answer anon:

>Golden Age (1938–1956)
>Silver Age (1956–1970)
>Bronze Age (1970–1986)
>Dark Age (1986–1991)
>Extreme age (1991-1997)
>Event (descompressive) age (1997-2011)
>Synergy age (2011-2019)
>Multiverse fatigue / various version of same hero / supporting characters became superhero age (2020-2023)
>ABSOLUTE AGE (2024-2029)
>>
>>152198288
I'd say we could put a micro "age" around when they were plastering everything for digital and MARVEL was doing the QR codd thing in every comic.
2010s was when everything was trying to become "movie source material mine age"

>>152198091

>>
>>152198069
Superhero comics have been consistently bad since they started. It's always been exceptions that stood out. Now, those exceptions aren't around.
>>152198091
There have been good superhero comics after Watchmen, many of those inspired by Watchmen.
>>
>>152198148

Makes me wonder just how much MTV reality shows brain rotted people at the time for thinking Millar was anything but mediocre writer, especially for sticking him to Marvels biggest event of the decade
>>
>>152197900
2001-14 could be called civil war age
2014-now could be called indie age, because image rose up and kept making decent shit while dc and marvel raced to the bottom. and when i say bottom i think x-men is the worst comic franchise right now. spider-man just above
>>
>>152201807
No, because the TV age started in the 2000s.

Name five

I'd say the current age should start somewhere between 2010-2013.
This is when DC goes hard on the New 52 (with stagnating sales) and Marvel goes hard on the MCU poisoning the comics (with a big jump in sales).
It's also around about the time that Walking Dead, Saga, and manga start lapping the big two on trade sales.

I do believe the iron age ended in the later 00's/early 10's and that we are on the archaic age of comics but I haven't been able to pinpoint a breaking point like the other ages had but you can tell comics today are different from what they were 20 years ago.
>>
>>152203518
DC: The New Frontier
Planetary
All-Star Superman
Marshal Law
90s Foolkiller
This is not counting Moore's later superhero works like Supreme or Top Ten, which are also good.

I guess my head canon for the ages would be
>Golden Age 1938-1955
>Silver Age 1956-1969
>Bronze Age 1970-1985
>Dark Age 1986-1991
>Extreme Age 1992-1999
>Event/Decompression Age 2000-2011
>Synergy Age/Comic that is a pitch for movie or tv show Age 2012-2019
>Modern age 2020-now will probably be called multiverse age when the next era of comics comes along
>>
>>152197900
Not much has changed in the last 20 years, so no.
>>
>>152198069
It has never been good
>>
>>152197900
The problem with hard defining ages is that in reality you have several years of transition between major defining factors.
>>
>>152197900
2000s are the 9/11 age when all the fun edgy disappeared so what was left was just edgy edgy
