That is actually a Gutten Nachtkrapp, a good version of a folklore bird from her land. The Nachtkrapp is am ill fated raven with sockets for its eyes and wings full of those eyes. People who see the raven's eye die a horrible death and those who see its wings fall ill. It's said to snatch children off of their windows at night and feast upon them on its nest, and in my AU, is the symbol and pets of the Marra and the Alps.The Gutten Nachtkrapp is the good version of this bird and is said to sing children to sleep and bring them good dreams. Is the symbol and pets of the sandmen and sandwomen. Marras and Alps fear them. Gerda has one for... a special reason XD but also has the same meaning as your assumption of being a night watch and protector.
