I really like comics that have dialogue on their cover. I think it makes them more interesting looking.

>>152242398No cap. or whatever that means.
>>152242407Indeed, Captain America isn’t on that cover
>>152242421here he is though
>>152242382I don't like it. It makes it seem like they're going hard on the gimmicks to fool morons because what's inside is not very impressive.
>>152242535A cover should be something that attracts the viewer to want to read what's inside. Some generic art piece or variant doesn't do that.
>>152242601This is mediocre art with corny words on it. This is an extension of bad comics interiors, in which the story is largely told through words, making the art superfluous, which defeats the whole purpose.A good cover should have good art that conveys a lot without resorting to using speech balloons. That should grab ya.
>>152242601It should give a sense of the inside without feeling like an interior page Speech bubbles on covers is lame
>>152242601>Only 1 item on the listThis comic sucks. Won't buy. 0/10
>>152242645>>152242681I for one think they are neat
>>152242645Comics should be on some level corny
I feel like at least a third of "superdickery" cases wouldn't be notable if there wasn't dialogue on the cover. I think 70s Avengers had a bit of a problem with covers being kind of off-track for the actual story in general.
>>152242802Superdickery is great
>>152242645Oh yeah? What about Uncle Sam? Would that poster work the same if it didn't say that he wanted you for U.S. Army? The words supplement the image with more layers of tone/attitude, social cues like what type of words this person may say denoting their background, the intensity of something, and can hint at things that images cannot. Yeah if it is all words that just equate to "things will never be the same" it gets samey as there only so many words. But there are only so many poses and angles you can draw something within. It depends on the context. The variety of tools or lack of variety just depends on the context and what warrants what. That cover is kino. If the words weren't there, I could say he is about to swat at a faggot like you or he is about to slap WW's ass or he is looking very mean while saying hello. But the words conjure up the right image and force you to see it as it is supposed to be. Artists need to use guides sometimes so that the audience is getting the right expectations met.
>>152242601this one is fantastic.
>>152244032IT warped Grant Morrison forever
>>152242767I agree
>>152242382Do they still do this?
>>152242601That face looks weird.
>>152246012I want to say yes but I can't remember the last time I've seen it
>>152242601>>152242681how is the flash gonna get out of this one?take my 35 cents
>>152242767That's a cope. They should be cool and good.>>152242832False equivalence. Posters have to convey their message (usually propaganda) on a single image. Comics have many pages and should convey their message in the story.>That cover is kino. The art is quite bad.You know why they make so many bad comics? Because people like you, the lowest common denominator, eat them up.
>>152246526Look at Captain NoFun over here. You're very mature.
This is my favorite comic cover. The dialogue improves it, it complements Flash holding out his arm for a friendly handshake.
>>152246012Does it count on variants intentionally trying to look older?Although this is a rather bad looking example.
>>152246610I like fun. This isn't fun.
I like covers where the characters are fighting or having a standoff.
>>152248466I like those too
>>152248466Who was in the wrong here?
>>152250741Hulk was being an asshole
>>152246526>The art is quite badAlright enlightened genius tell us in detail why you think it looks bad. Other than vague shit like this >>152246112>poster...single image...should convey their message in the storyAh but we are talking about the cover. Not the pages. You say text on a cover is an extension of the story inside and thus is watered down. Now take a look at pic rel which is the progenitor and chief example of this artfirst conveyance of the story. What does it have? Text on the cover teasing this unusual silent issue. That text pulls the attention arguably more than the pose of Snake Eyes himself. It only conveys so much. It can be limiting only having silent issues and there is only so many ways body language and actions can convey. Covers are a single image and are what grabs your attention. What is the difference between propaganda and marketing in your eyes? Answer me that. Also calling me the lowest common denominator while saying what you want to limit what many artists in a medium should use, is below what the lowest common denominator thinks.
>>152252505>>152246526Also what I wanted to additionally say, is that the cover should not be required to convey the whole message of the story just as the title of a book should not be the entire story summed up completely in one simple to understand concept all the time. Should Moby Dick be titled revenge? Should The Great Gatsby be titled capitalism and nostalgia? These titles and covers are sometimes only teases. And covers that are ordinary are sometimes just as effective as the story itself could come out of left-field and change everything. Yes that means the cover is sacrificed for something else. But it can be just a tool just as text on a cover is just another tool. It isn't inherently pointless or useless.
>>152242382Iron Man is so cool
>>152252505My issue is with speech balloons uttered by characters on the cover, not with any and all text on the cover, and the fact that it is employed as a sales gimmick instead of focusing on making good work.>>152252563You've completely lost the plot.
>>152246222Man, this cover is fucking badass.
>>152246634quite brutal
>>152253431He really is cool
>>152251247Like how MAD?
>>152242407aw the edgehas peter ever fallen and killed someone?
>>152257746crap ass drawing wtf
>>152242728
>>152242382I like dialogue covers when they’re the creators’ or editors’ choice. But in 1970s Marvel it was mandated that almost all covers should have dialogue because research suggested that kids were more likely to buy dialogue covers. And it was a very weak era for Marvel covers compared to the 60s, though that’s partly because the art department standardized the look of covers (like a villain on one side and a hero on the other).Around the early Jim Shooter era (and the collapse of the newsstand market) they went back to using dialogue covers only as a special effect, which worked better.
