In general, it seems as though Glitch operates with the assumption that each show will be "greenlit". I guess things could grind to a halt if reception was SO miserable that there was no prospect of success whatsoever, but the will they/won't they greenlight thing is mostly to encourage fans to buy merch and then give them an excuse to give the show a PR bump later on after the initial excitement dies down a bit. They'll post some official art to celebrate (which was already made well in advance) and will have a whole PR schedule pre-established for the next several months. This is not unlike how mainstream networks operate. The public announcements tend to trail well behind the actual production. Sometimes shows are only announced to have been renewed or greenlit when production is already finished or at least well on its way. As long as you think it takes to animate something, it's actually longer. Delaying these sorts of announcements helps make sure people don't get too excited too early on and then forget about it. A successful launch has a lot to do with proper promotion which is all about timing.

Glitch really needs a new business model. Right now it's release a pilot along with some merchandise and hope the merchandise sells well enough to fund the rest of the show. It worked for Digital Circus since it has great character designs and Murder Drones since the characters are hot, not working nearly as well for the other shows with more bland and uninteresting characters. I appreciate them putting out the episodes for free but in the long term they need to come up with a new way to make money since their current method isn't sustainable.

They canceled Mao Mao because they *believed* it wouldn't push merch, because apparently a black cat with green eyes wouldn't make for a good plush toy or something. I'm not retarded so I wouldn't know the decision making of Cartoon Network executives.It's not just western animation either. Panty and Stocking got a second season because people were buying the merch.The difference between Glitch and Cartoon Network is Cartoon Network has the overhead to let a show breath for a few seasons before pulling the plug. For a studio the size of Glitch, episode 2 is dependent on the merch sales. It sucks but that's the way it's always been, ad revenue wasn't enough on cable and it's not enough on youtube.

Generally, the move is to be curious and explore things, allow yourself to become incredibly passionate, and then create something borne out of that passion. If you make something for someone exactly like you, you'll at least make something that resonates with yourself (and, by extension, will likely resonate with other people). The problem is more when people try to game the system and make something to be popular. Sometimes that works, but just as often it ends up being soulless bullshit because it was never created to appeal to anyone specific - the idea was that it would PROBABLY appeal to a wide chunk of the audience base, but nobody really knows. This is one of the reasons why indie is finding a foothold over mainstream animation - projects are driven by actual vision instead of some focus group or boardroom.

Commercial kitchens have multiple "stations" where each person performs a specific function. One person may work solely on sautee station and they sautee any component of any dish that needs to be sauteed. They are very good at their station, but that still requires sous chefs overseeing the operation as well as an expediter who "fires" off courses to keep tables timed well. It's hard to wrap your head around if you've never actually worked in a tightly choreographed situation like that (animation, kitchens, etc), but it's a completely different set of skills that you need to hone from being a hobbyist. Hobbyists can get the basic skillset required to then jump into a pipeline, but there will still be a TON of learning involved to be able to hang. The problem is a lot of hobbyists can create good meals (or drawings) on their own time and think they know how the industry works when they really have no clue. "I don't know why your kitchen can't just throw together some spaghetti and meatballs. You have all the ingredients". Yeah, but you're thinking about making one thing for one person at home. When you scale up, suddenly little changes like that completely fuck up the otherwise well oiled machine.
