It's kind of weird that a meme that started on 4chan made it into a movie, videogames, got a bunch of merch and is now trademarked by WB as a separate character

Is this true?
If so how does shit like this even work legally? They already own Bugs Bunny, so are they legally just allowed to take the name "Big Chungus" without giving anything to the person who gave him that name?

I remember seeing that character reveal in my YouTube feed years ago.
Is the game any good?
>>
>>152302293
I want to say their lawyers looked into it first but with how business runs, they got away with it because no one sued them for ownership of Big Chungus and they're assuming that's because they have legal right to it.

A trademark can have very narrow application. It is also not concerned with matters of authorship, but of granting exclusive usage (or intent to use) of imagery and words in commerce. It operates on a first come, first serve basis. WB owns it because they registered it, not because they created it.
For a related example, look up how Tesla fumbled the registration of "Cybercab."
>are they legally just allowed to take the name "Big Chungus" without giving anything to the person who gave him that name
What would they be paying him for? Coming up with a name or meme is not sufficiently substantial or creative enough for copyright protection. Even if it were, it was created in relation to a character WB owns. In other words, it's derivative art, which the original copyright owner can control.

Copyright law easily reaches such insane level of bullshit you'd think german philosophers wrote it, it's completely possible to end up in a deadlock where some guy on reddit doesn't own bugs bunny but owns the name and concept of "Big Chungus" because he made enough watermarked edits to count as derivative work, and if you use fat Bugs Bunny and just call him something else like "the Chonkler" you're now infringing on HIS rights so neither of you can use the character until you give him ten bucks to fuck off or he gives you a billion dollars for the IP.

Not for rabbits. They usually eat grass and leaves, not roots.
If you put an entire carrot in front of a rabbit it will usually eat the leaves first.

There are so many children using sharty lingo like gem, keyed, o algo, vantablack coal, who are still too ignorant to know 4chan and the sharty aren't the same website. I've seen an uptick in normies using kino too.

>>
>>152302194
You're surprised by this? A large swath of internet culture originates from 4chan, co-opted by tourists who then spread it to their communities where it gets spread even further until you end up hearing random teenage fucks on TikTok calling something "based".
It's part and parcel of being on this site. You pile enough shit in one place, eventually something will grow.

>>
>>152317288
>most people don't use 4chin
As much as regulars, no. But an unspoken rule of social media is that because 4chan conversations are generally unfiltered due to anonymity, they are considered to be the funniest and most entertaining conversations out there. Screencaps of threads get shared everywhere from Tumblr and Reddit to Facebook and X and beyond, where people can experience 4chan humor without actually coming to the site.
Memes from 4chan, when they are spread to other sites, are presented as pseudo-absurdist humor because the context is almost completely lost on those who have never come here. When you see a meme spreading here, if you lurk long enough you'll get some understanding of how it started, whether it be a helpful anon outright explaining the joke or simply gleaning the meaning from repeated usage. But someone on Tumblr has none of that, so when they see a picture of Daffy Duck in a zoot suit with the caption "literally me", they laugh because it's so bizarre.
