Literally every adult thought that Pokemon was just going to be a temporary fad back then, they didn't really understand just how utterly pervasive it was for kids growing up at the time. And to be fair during Gen III it actually DID look like it was running out of steam for a second, then the Pokemon nostalgia wave hit during Gen IV and it's never gone back.
>>
>>152317053
>then the Pokémon nostalgia wave hit during Gen IV and it's never gone back.
Considering the absolute state of the franchise in terms of game quality that was for the worst.
T. Guy that stopped after USUM.
>>
>>152317134
Oh yeah I would never imply that was a good thing lol, it's just something that happened. The more recent mainline games have been shockingly bad.

>>152317031
You gotta give it to Pokemon, it managed to ascend to a level no other video game franchise could ever hope to. Even the "under the rock" people from my 3rd world shithole have a vague idea about it. No other franchise except for Mario enjoys this kind of ubiquity. Pikachu is probably up there with Mickey Mouse and Superman in terms of recognizability at this point.
>>
>>152317146
>>152317190
>>152317134
Pokemon is still capable of making good games they just get into certain things they probably sent it in the mainline titles but the Pokemon Legends series with it second game z-a is good.
>>
>>152317134
I couldn’t even finish Sun because of all the cut scenes. I got to the end and the wave of uninteresting cutscenes kept rolling in and I put the game down and never picked it back up. I played Arceus and enjoyed it immensely but ZA looked like shit. I may hop back in with Champions.
>>
>>152317031

I mean they're funny topical issue of the week guys, not fucking clairvoyants.

I doubt they would have imagined South Park would still be airing 26 years later either

That's weird, considering Gen III was the peak as far as the games go
>>
>>152317042
OP probably got sodomized by Paris Hilton's security detail again.
>>
As a franchise Pokemon is a top dog, but in terms of relevance to the public sphere it was a fad. Like the days where Pokemania dominated everything where relatively short lived even if Pokemon continues to make more and more money. The same thing happened again when Pokemon Go came out
>>
>>152317316
The games didn't sell well, the anime got worse, and it was when the original people who grew up with it were going through their "EW THAT'S FOR KIDS" phase so the merch stopped selling as well too. The quality of the games didn't really matter much, Gen III was a clear low point in terms of the franchise's overall relevance.

Ruby/Sapphire sold 16million, that was only 2nd to GTA that generation.
>>
>>152317053
Gen 3 only suffered for starting less than a year into a new console, where as every prior mainline game except Crystal were playable on a Game Boy from 1989. Otherwise sales were still great.
>>
>>152317042
I'm taking a swing in the dark here but I think OP might me talking shit about South Park's creators.
>>
>>152317990
Wasn't Emerald the worst selling game in the series?
>>
>>152317990
You're not wrong but it was a huge drop off compared to Gens I and II and emerald infamously sold way under expectations despite now widely being regarded as one of the best games in the series. When talking about something as big as Pokemon relative popularity to previous installments is more important than overall sales compared to others in the industry.
>>
>>152317316
Gen3 was the first one without backwards compatibility so that really fucking kneecapped the franchise. Especially since G2got fucked over for the longest time that during G3, there was no legit way to get the G/S Pokemon outside a select few untill way late in the DS era, where you then had the issue where due to compatibility issues, the R/B Pokemon monsters were now impossible to get outside of a rare few and only then, only after you beat the game via Platinum, which by the time the G/S remakes came out, was out of print and selling for $300+ MIB due to this feature.
>>
>>152318090
Both can be the same. Gen3 pretty much codified and refined the gameplay into what we know it to be today. But between it not being compatible with G1-2, the original fanbase aging out, the anime having lost its popularity, and the fact that Ruby and Sapphire were two separate games with their own unique stories (pissing off fans who just bought one game), there was a lot factors where at least R/S/E flopped enough that they had to break glass and remake Red and Blue.
>>
>>152317031
In fairness, nobody outside of autists care about Pokemon anymore. In the 90s it was a kids thing but now it's exclusively for autismos who liked it in the 90s but never grew up mentally.
>>
>>152317031
They thought it was a cartoon to sell toys. They didn't realize that the cartoon and the toys were to sell a video game. They did get that the "Gotta Catch 'Em All" tagline was to get kids to obsessively collect Pokémon but didn't understand games and CCGs.
>>

That is a lie, unc. I recently worked as an unc in an office with born after 9/11 Zoomers. Pokemon is in.

>>
>>152318323
That's not true, plenty of kids are still into it too. My friend's son at least was obsessed with collecting Pokemon cards. Nice to see that's still a thing.

>I doubt they would have imagined South Park would still be airing 26 years later either
Matt and Trey didn't just think Pokemon was gonna be a fad, they thought South Park itself was gonna be a fad that fizzled out in popularity. It's part of why they rushed to make the South Park movie so early in the show's history to capitalize on the popularity while it was still high.

And it's not 26 years, the show came out in august 1997 so it'll be 29 years this August, so almost 30. Almost 34 years if you want to go all the way back to the original South Park short.
>>
I think it's really fucking weird that post-Go pokemon is the biggest it's ever been after gen 1.

pokeyman fans are severely autistic and actually prefer how terrible pokemon games have become, they yearn for the slop
>>
>>152318496
Even in 2007 it was acceptable again, at least in my area. As I recall for my age group (born 88), Pokemon was considered awesome in grade school, then considered lame in junior high when everybody was trying to look mature, and then by high school we all liked it again.
>>
>>152318374
Oh yeah, now that you mention it, they didn't even talk about the games at all in that episode. If it was a more accurate depiction, they would have had the boys talk about Mew (or whatever parody version of it) being real and trading their chinpokomons.

The anime's problem is that they kept on dragging the story, never letting Ash win even a single championship until like 20 years after the original episode aired.

OP here. I am pretty sure that's not what a "trend" is, cuz that can apply to literally anything. Going by your definition stuff like baseball is a fad. Heck, even South Park itself was just a fad using that logic. A fad is something that pops up, sticks around for some time (maybe even a couple of years) and then goes away. Like Furbies. Pokemon on the other hand is immortalized.

Like there is a sizable percentage of kids today who still love Pokemon 3 decades after its debut. I don't think there are too many Alphaoomers who are begging their parents to buy them a funny doll.

yet the series has been directly in the shitter quality wise since the 3ds games. i have absolutely zero respect for people who still defend and give money to game freak when they've shown time and time again they don't respect their fanbase in any way whatsoever for near 13 years at this point. mindless drones willing to throw endless money at games that make wii era shovelware look good.

>>
>>152317031
If this episode came out today, they'd just directly refer it pokemon instead of coming up with something like Chinpokomon. Or probably talk about it using some gay "allegory" like one of Randy or Cartman's schemes that shares some similarities with pokemon, with some punny line loke him saying "Poke a man" over and over. ("Haha get it? Poke a man sounds similar to Pokemon. Now get ready to hear it a million times for the rest of the episode.")

gaming has just expanded exponentially. In terms of relative cultural impact I think pokemon has fallen off rather hard due to the low quality of the games. It's a real shame since competitive 2v2 is actually a really entertaining mode and works decently as a spectator sport as well.

just a post from someone who used to play a lot of vidya and hasn't been the target audience for a long, long time. i didn't grow out of vidya. it just stopped catering to people like me, because video games are ultimately a business, and it is more financially wise to keep milking a stupid, ignorant audience over making a complete and polished single player game. we get a gem here and there rarely but for the most part the video game industry has been a shambling corpse for ages now.

they had a chance with 'let's go' to bring us oldtimers back in touch with the new mechanics (held items, abilities, etc), but instead they chose to make a lobotomized piece of shit for phonebabies, and then when we finally got the free-roaming 3d console game we'd wanted for -twenty fucking years,- it was... bad. Because they felt they didn't need to put in effort. then they openly lied about things that were instantly disproven vis-a-vis its production.

They thought that because they saw the cancerous 4kids English dub, & released how stupid is was. No one had access to the sub of Pokemon, but if they did, that South Park episode would have been made different from what we got. I'm guessing they never once played the video games. The trading card & video games came out first before the anime.

It honestly feels like any Japanese thing could have been used for this, but Pokemon was the biggest at the time and I guess just fit a bit more than, say, Dragon Ball.

I disagree because I think you're talking about different things. I lived through the popularity explosion of Pokemon. It is hard to quantify in today's world where people, especially with entertainment, are pulled in so many directions. That explosion certainly did die down, not in terms of "it was all a passing fad that completely died and it was never going to be a franchise," but certainly in terms of "kids move on to other things as well," which is what I think the episode really was trying to get at. I don't think Matt and Trey were outright saying it was a passing trend, I think they were saying that kids get really into stuff, people get left out, then things move on.

All things ultimately can go through peaks and troughs and I think a lot of people kind of understood that the huge explosion of Pokemon wasn't going to be sustained.
