>fully bio coluan brainiac>android brainiac>cyborg brainiac>robot brainiacWhich and why?
the STAS version is so much better it amazes me anyone would ever argue for the classic version. The Silver Age version is sch an awful design and a clear victim of so many classic comic characters being created with no real plan and just hacking it out that month, and thus being committed to an awful design for decades
>>152321171android and robot are kind of the same thing>>152321427Right? DCAUniac rules. The only thing I don't love is like, I'm solidly confused on how many of him there are throughout the universe now, how far he has spread himself. Is he like the Borg? Is it totally impossible to completely wipe him out? How did "Brainiac" (not "A Brainiac") appear in the 30th century to steal a time travel machine, and why did he still look exactly the same? After all he's been through, he hasn't maybe thought to try something else?also it's pretty rad the way Krypton's destruction now becomes part of a mad computer's plan to know everything by scanning and then destroying everything. Futurama, eat your heart out.
>>152321427I was really young when STAS came out and for years that was the only Brainiac I knew, when I got older and finally saw the original version I thought it was the goofiest gayest shit in the world. The STAS version should have become the standard.
>>152321171Full bio dot head because classic.Full robot skull face because Kirby design and I grew up with it.
>>152321427STAS should be the standard design, BUT let's never make him something that Krypton made or the reason for the death of the planet. Just some cosmic horror that came by in the final days.
>>152321171STAS Brainiac was one of the series' rare misses. Reducing him to just another villain from krypton when there are already so many other Superman villains like that makes him feel less unique and reduces the scope of the setting overall. His design also ruins the recurring motif of green and purple being colours used to represent villains posed against Superman's red and blue. Brainiac being a cyborg Coluan obsessed with preserving the knowledge and culture of not just his people but the civilisations of the galaxy in such a perverse and cold way makes him a fantastic foil to Superman and his way of carrying on krypton's culture.
>>152321493He's truly up there with Mr. Freeze for "they finally got him right. STICK WITH THIS for a while" redesigns.
>>152321171Coluan. That first Brainiac story is amazing. STAS Brainiac looks cool but only cause he's literally Spaceder-Man, Spaceder-Man, Intergalactic Spaceder-Man.
>>152321552I like giving him that special connection to Superman, but I can also see why people might think it's a little too convenientLike in MAWS where every fucking thing and every character is connected to the same shit, and it gets a bit tiresome.
>>152321171I'm so tired of adaptations making Brainiac Kryptonian.
>>152321427Concidering the route our technology is going STAS brainiac gets more relevant with time. Even his logic is something I think people today would unironically agree with today.
>>152322091Kekanon, none of the things you are told are real. If they were, they'd be hidden from you.>his logicthat it's better to wipe out a planet and keep a record of it? I mean yeah, objectively. existence is suffering. Anyone who doesn't believe in a loving god who is a-cookin'a-somethin' up, should be working together on a way to end it. It's the largest obstacle we have, the greatest enemy.but uh, a loving god is indeed a-cookin'a-somethin' up, so. Yknow get on that instead. He'll delete the planet when he's good and ready, then reboot it in a way that sucks less this time.
>>152322033I wasn't aware this had become a trend. and given how many people here are like "This is how he should be in every adaptation" I don't think they're aware of it either.
>>152321171>lists 4 different versions >picture only displays 3 ??
>>152322141That's because said adaptations are mostly shitty live action shows when most people mainly care about animation and movies
>>152322007>I like giving him that special connection to Superman,I'd argue that him putting Kandor in the bottle and being the source of Superman's largest connection to his home world is already enough to make him note worthy.
The Harley Quinn take surprised me
>>152321171Coluan-created robot that escaped control and destroyed its creators.
>>152321171>>152321427I call Silver Age Brainiac Ralph Lauren Brainiac sometimes because of that polo he wears.
>>152321504Kirby didn't design Terminator Brainiac, nor did George Perez (who often gets credited as being responsible for the redesign since he did the Luthor battle suit that debuted in the same issue). A literal who named Ed Hannigan did.And the reason they ditched it was that artists kept bitching about it non stop being "too difficult to draw", with even Perez complaining about having to draw the individual panels on Brainiac's head during Crisis.
>>152321171The Terminator one looks best.
Brainiac is such a nothing character to fight over. Brainiac Luthor could've worked with any, because that's how worthless he is, what matters is Luthor.
>>152321171Any design that isn't green is cringe>>152323460They probably just gave up on his convoluted backstory
>>152322007>>152321552creating a meta-origin has been a thing for adaptations since the 70s, mainline DC and 616 marvel are grandfathered outliers rather than the storycreating a single point-0 origin where the world outside your window becomes the fantastic world and tying all origins to a singular origin event is neater
>>152324347>his convoluted backstorySome AI/guy from Colu, if he's a guy, make it so he augmented himself with cybernetics so much that he's more machine than man, he now goes around the universe stealing cities from worlds as an excuse to study and preserve them, it's really not that complicated.
>>152321171Fully robotic, totally emotionless killer computer system hell-bent on playing the long game to consume more and more of the matter in the universe to turn into its own processors. I like him being the cause of Krypton's demise, but not being FROM Krypton. And then when they finally break into the mothership to destroy its core, they find a scrawny, atrophied green guy with 100's of wires and tubes sticking out of him who over the course of eons has ship of theseus'd himself into the lovecraftian horror he is today.
>>152325687I prefer when he's presented as originally being a fully biological guy who lost his humanity at some point, makes for a better contrast with Clark.
>>152321171Whatever allows for Brainy to exist
>>152325711That's kind of what I meant. The implication is that he was just some Coluan who turned himself into a cyborg at some point, kept upgrading his hardware and adding to himself more and more until he's a universe-level being. He's a supervillain who just won on his own planet, and after consuming all of Colu, he just kept going.
>>152323553Koko?
>>152321427>let's just take the Eradicator>and call him BrainiacNo
>>152321171Multiple choice where every version is valid and optional for the story you want to use
Bleedniac is the best one.
>>152325835Is a cyborg still a cyborg once he stops having organic parts? Or just an android/robot? Is he even still himself? Or just a simulation of someone who doesn't exist anymore?
>>152321427>>152321473I reckon there's two reasons why STASniac never stuckFirst, there's enough Kryptonian villains in the comics. As others have mentioned, his backstory is too similar to the Eradicator as it is.Second, can't really have the bottle city of Kandor and that's too iconic to get rid of.
>>152321171I grew up with Android Brainiac. The idea that he used to be an actual green guy rocked my world
>>152321171I would go with:>AI origin, but is not called Brainiac yet and just like STAS one, he was of Kryptonian origin and did similar stuff like his STAS incarnation>Escapes and floats in space for God knows how long until a certain Coluan by the name of Vril Dox finds him and analyzes the hell out of him>Seeing that the AI could benefit his own intellect, Vril installs it into itself resulting in the dormant AI to awaken and realize he's plugged into the Coluan>After a mental battle, both realize that they are pretty much the same as it and Vril want to achieve perfection and collect information about civilizations to further use to perfect themselves>This revelation results in both the AI and Vril to merge into one entity and rechristening themselves into a new individual by the name of Brainiac>Brainiac proceedst to further modify himself with Kryptonian tech he got from the AI (including applying the STAS looks) and proceeds to become a menace to everyone in the galaxy
>>152325873Eradicator is lamer with a weaker design, so the cooler take should supercede him.
>>152324257>A literal who named Ed HanniganMoviecasual please fuck off back to /tv/
has any adaptation done both so it's robot Brainiac and green alien Brainiac being two separate characters teaming up and eventually merging?
>>152321171Did he name himself brainiac because why would he pick something that's vaguely insulting?
>>152330707Superman was at one point so big in pop culture his villain became the reason for the sarcastic saying.
>>152328154>AI origin>Kryptonian originImmediately lost me.
I just want some pants. A decent pair of pants!
>>152330751The AI itself is of Kryptonian origin like STAS Brainiac, but it becomes Brainiac after it fuses with the Coluan Vril Dox due to both having identical aims of gaining knowledge and becoming perfect through said knowledge.
>>152325623This. I like the idea that he’s a Coluan scientist who transcended bodily limitations in order to dethrone the Computer Tyrants, yet ended up becoming even more dangerous and cold than them. He works as almost a mix of Superman and Lex.
>>152326728I think that’s one of the questions you can ask with Brainiac. He’s a unique being in that regard.
>>152321171the "Superman 78" version is probably has the best origin. >biological column>puts his mind into a robot body>allows him to be a cool robot AND have an actual biological son (Vril Dox)Making Brainiac a kryptonian computer is lame
>>152321171Brainiac seems like somehow less of a major cosmic threat that takes down worlds at his leisure when you later find out there is a whole planet full of Coluans just like him. But they are somehow not the biggest or scariest group in space at all. They mostly keep to themselves. Meanwhile Psions, Kryptonians, and other races still appear to have better more advanced technology than him too. A super smart guy from space who is supposed to be the superest smartest one ever should be near Guardians level with things that are more advanced than the shit on Apokolips.
>>152321171The robots were always way more visually interesting for a supervillain from space in a comic. While Brainiac spent the first 25 years of his existence as a nondescript green guy in a polo shirt, and for the last 20 years has been a nondescript green guy in a black shirt. The main problem with Coluan Brainiac is that he is really boring. At best he is alien Lex Luthor who does the same evil science shit. His only interesting aspect is that he makes for a good origin character for Zod. Kryptonian AI Brainiac only really works in a setting where Superman is the only superhrero and Krypton is the only known alien world so it all fits together nicely. It's not necessary in a shared universe.
>>152333418They’re nothing like him, though. They’re just really smart aliens, and there’s plenty of those in the DCU.
>>152325859Yes
>>152321993>He's truly up there with Mr. Freeze for "they finally got him rightMore like General Zod. No one cared about him until he was chosen as the main villain for Superman II.
Bump.
>>152321171Cyborg all day.
>>152321171What are some good brainiac stories beside Johns one?
I like full bio Coluan in his first appearance and slowly becoming bigger and more modded after every defeat at the hands of Superman until he goes full Mr House long in the future before being succeeded by later generations leading to Braniac 5 in the Legion of Superheroes.
>>152321427>The Silver Age version is sch an awful designNah, it was kind of cool. If anything, his skull ship that was introduced with him endured longer that design.
>>152321171Cyborg is the coolest. Comics, live wction, games. It doesn't miss.
>My name is Vril Dox.>I'm the fastest man alive.
I like the idea that Brainiac has become so unique that even other Coluans would see him as something alien. Almost like the Coluans equivalent of what the transhumanists see the Singularity as doing to humans. He’s a being that doesn’t truly belong anywhere.
>>152321427Anon is absolutely right. Not to mention that many classic fans here love the redesigns that directly addressed these issues. But since these redesigns came out 50 years ago, they think it's totally fine.
>>152336047This one is fun, establishes Brainiac as an android and he teams up with Lex. Almost feels like a buddy movie considering how much time we spend with the two villains.
More like Gayniac lol
A mix with all desings would be great.
>>152323256Triangle era brainiac I guess
This was cool design. The fully robotic design being a separate character, like with the Y2K Brainiac was a good idea, I think that was Brainiac 13.
>>152336047Reborn,Panic in the sky, Waid's identity crisis, AC242,every team Up with Luthor, Whatever happened to the man of tomorow.House of Brainiac is not bad although the ending was rushed. Morrison/PJK take on the character is surprisingly fun(going full PETA) although S&The Authority is just Morrison doing something quickly because Diddio wanted to Injustice'd Superman.
>>152332860I don't fucking care for STAS Brainiac and I'm so tired of secondaries pushing for it.
>>152329433Erradicator was in three of the greatest stories of superman(Exile, Day of Krypton Man and Death and Return)STAS's Brainiac was not even the most interesting villain in that show.
>>152339924He looks lame anon, I do f know what to tell you. Superman with safety goggles is not a unique compelling villain design
>>152341274>Superman with safety goggles is not a unique compelling villain designnta but for me I was more fan of this design version of Eradicator. It looks more cooler imo.
>>152341339
>>152341274The safety googles were something for DoS , I rather have Krypton Man design
>>152321171I prefer the robot, but I'm open-minded if longtime superman fans feel differently, because they might know something about the importance of the bio versions that I don't.I think this way because of Spider-Man. web shooters are superior to organic, but dipshits who just watched a movie as a child that got everything wrong desperately want their movie to be double plus canon, and I want to make sure I'm never like those retards.
>>152325687There's not a single bit in there that's lovecraftian, which is good, because he's the most overrated writer of all time
>>152341274I'm already sick and tired of Evil Superman being as the villain anyway. We already have Bizarro, Ultraman, Composite Superman, and Cyborg. Enough with the damn clones of Superman. Eradicator can look like something else than another Clarke...but with the glasses on.
Legit question but what do Colu ties add to the character?
>>152332260This is my favorite Brainiac but this is objectively the coolest one
>>152321171
>>152343077I think that design works best as a drone
>>152343055Not really anything at all except for an origin. Coluans never appear much outside of a big space event and they want to show of things happening on the main known planets like Thanagar and Tamaron. It's just a planet full of green bald people and they never really accomplish much or take part in anything either. They don't appear to be one of the most advanced worlds out there either. Colu barely looks any more impressive than any other alien planet that has space age technology like Korugar or everything in the Vega system.
>>152343456LEGION was an interesting book back in the 00s when Vril Dox was the leader and all around asshole in charge kind of guy. But yeah, for a guy that is supposed to be one of the smartest in the universe, he never had much in the way of impressive technology.Random smart guys on Earth using backwards Earth technology are making robots and mech suits that can take on Kryptonians. Earth Government can manufacture Captain Atom clones. He randomly got a Sinestro Ring once and was going full god mode until it disapproved of him and flew off.
>>152321171Yes
>>152321171Robot, based entirely on the fact that I cannot see the green alien guy as anything but alien flavor Lex Luthor. And we already got a super smart bald guy that builds rays and robots.
>>152343618Johns’ Brainiac is still the best version.
>>152345377meh
>>152321427FPWPThe STAS version just makes the DCU smaller. Long Live the Legion.
>>152321171he's so shinyyy
>>152341652I didn't mean to imply that he's portrayed as Lovecraftian in modern stories, but rather that he would have grown to be a universe-eating monster at that level by the time they meet him in the headcanon that I just made up.>>152343169Yeah, any robo braniac should absolutely just be an avatar of the non-physical AI. It makes a good foil for infinite strength man to have something he can't just punch away.
>>152348058Isn't that just Ultron
>>152348073Wouldn't know, I'm not a marvelfag.
I like how really alien Brainiac is he treated DCU as big science experiments even Superman despised him
>>152349124I think that’s what separates him from both Superman and Lex: Superman is a man of two worlds while Lex is all about Earth and humanity, but Brainiac has made himself so alien that even his own people wouldn’t see him as Coluan. He’s essentially an alien everywhere.
>>152348073In the MCU maybe, not really Ultron.
Brainiac with beard look funny
>>152338875He would probably be gay by now.
>>152321171STAS is my least favorite version. His design is dull as fuck, and they fucked up his backstory. They basically took Eradicator's backstory and gave it to Brainiac. Actually no, scratch that, MAWS is my least favorite version because they just took the STAS version and made him even more Eradicator-like.
>>152321171>fully bio coluan brainiac>android brainiac>cyborg brainiac>robot brainiacYou missed one. Psychic entity Brainiac possessing a human body which he altered to look more like him.
>>152333093This.
>>152321427>>152321473>>152321493I'm convinced it's impossible to love STAS Brainiac unless he was the first version you ever saw and the image imprinted on your malleable brain, so you came to think of him as the baseline to which all other versions must adhere, rather than the poorly conceived, dumbed-down outlier he is in reality. It's such an irredeemably awful interpretation of the character.
