>Adapting a plot point that was radically retconned shortly afterward with no alterations, then adapt the retconned version without alteration.
Look, I get the value of being faithful and all that when you're doing an adaptation, but isn't it more important that the sequence of events make sense? The retcon that the Wizard had nothing to do with Ozma's abduction was just a plothole because unraveling the mystery hinged on him being in league with Mombi, but when that turned out not to be case there was no clarification as to how it ended up looking like he was or why they aren't suspicious of him when he returns. It doesn't really make sense to adhere to such an obvious problem with the story.

Could it just be a lie?

You mean the version of events recounted in Land of Oz or Wizard IN Oz? Neither really makes sense as a lie. In Land, Glinda already knows the Wizard was in league with Mombi and Mombi's own version of the story had to be true due to being magically compelled to tell the truth. While in Wizard IN Oz, despite Ozma herself already knowing the previous version of the story, does not question the Wizard when he claims he didn't appear in Oz until after Mombi had already taken her.
