Not hard to do, she's a badnik. Versatile, thy name is Belle. She can do stealth, which is normally pretty restricted to Rouge or Espio, as well as tinkering which is similarly stuck under Tails' dumb tablet, social skills similar to Cream or classic era Amy, and so on. Jack of all trades characterization is good for setting up plots and scenarios requiring broad competence, which can stretch disbelief if applied elsewhere.

This isn't a joke either, suspension of disbelief is a major hurdle for twitch gaming, comic book writing, and furry subculture. Belle could be set up to be a sinus in that eternal tug of war, with less real expectation of great plot device-level abilities or characterization but solid grounding in broad 'stuff' that makes whatever she's up to just not as much trouble to find believable.

Not a replacement for Sonic, but not one of his orbiters either. A good, honest comic book plot girl who gets to do things that matter to the arc this year without it ending up committing every single resource the comic and its readers have to playing it out.

...now watch as none of that happens, obv. We aren't allowed nice things over here in IDW Sonic, only broken dreams and early 2000s grainy punk-rock AMVs.

Honestly, I believe this is unironically the main reason Ian, Evan, and so many of the modern generation of Sonic writers just outright suck at their jobs: their overreliance on Twitter, Tumblr, Reddit, and, back in their fan days, DeviantArt.
They are always trying to match the whims of this specific niche of readers who are their specific following (many from their DA days), and they miss the rest of the fandom by a mile. This isn’t helped by the fact that said readers often praise them based solely on who they are rather than the actual quality of their stories. Combined with the fast feedback loop caused by social media, it becomes a disaster.

Alas… this is not an isolated IDW issue; many modern creators are trapped in the same loop.

I don't understand the end goal of Belle, or this story arc in general. She's essentially just a leftover of Tinker, a plot point that isn't coming back. And having to point out that Eggman WOULD accept an artificial daughter, Belle just isn't good enough, just feels like it's leading to more crying and misery porn. It's not like Belle can turn Sage against Eggman using a therapy session either, cause she's not an IDW OC. She has to keep her status quo loyalty to Eggman.
I feel like they should have had Belle retire on Scrapnik Island and avoided a direct comparisons to her "I'm you but stronger" in the first place.
