Afternoon!>>152445915That's a pretty good JSC
How was Aliens vs Avengers or Avengers vs Aliens?
>>152446965The Hickman series? It was very Hickman. Complete with Mr. Sinister being the real villain for some reason.

>>152447161It looks like Evergreen designs. I wasn't paying attention, is the new Sentry mini not in main canon?
>>152446981Who did it better?

>>152448818It's a bi-weekly thread
>>152448531They wouldn't. Writers are too lazy to come up with scenarios where the alien would be deadly. They go from being over or under powered depending on what is needed for the scene. It happens in the Aliens comics and it's worse in crossovers.

>Carol Danvers, Captain Marvel, has had one of the most complicated journeys as a superhero in the Marvel Universe. Heck, it took her almost a decade to become a superhero to BEGIN with, and then it took her another three decades plus to finally become Captain Marvel. That complicated history is the centerpiece of her new series, Captain Marvel: Dark Past, a miniseries by star writer Paul Jenkins and star artist, Lucas Werneck.>The new series is the second project announced for Marvel by Jenkins after the writer returned to Marvel recently, along with writing a new series starring the Sentry, who Jenkins co-created over 25 years ago.>In a CBR exclusive interview with Jenkins, we discuss the new Captain Marvel series, as well as his return to the Sentry. Exclusive first look artwork of Captain Marvel: Dark Past will be mixed into the interview, and at the end of the interview, we'll have the exclusive reveal of the solicitation for Captain Marvel: Dark Past #2 (as well as the solicitation for the first issue, just so you can see both).
>CBR: What was your first exposure to Carol Danvers in a comic book? She'd gone through so many different eras, Taylor Swift-style, it's always interesting to me to see which one she was in when someone was first introduced to her as a character.Paul Jenkins: I’d say the Ms. Marvel era was probably the first time I noticed the character, which actually creates a big gap because she had been a U.S. Air Force officer and had been granted her powers by then. That being said, I was mostly aware of the character, but the run by Kelly Sue Deconnick really opened up the character for me. That was such a foundational, intriguing run that spoke to the interesting nature of the character.Outside some small appearances in Civil War: Front Line, and a guest appearance (as part of the Avengers) in a Hulk annual (where I think she had two lines of dialogue), I don't believe you've ever written Carol Danvers before. What do you find the most interesting about diving into writing her for the first time?I’ve always liked to look under the hood a bit, focus on what makes the character interesting. I think Carol is a lot like Spider-Man in one sense; if she had never been granted powers she would still have been a fascinating person. I always thought Peter Parker would have been a teacher, or something like that. Carol was already a military pilot and an accomplished person by the time her powers manifested. If you stripped her powers away she would still be a badass - brave, thoughtful, a strong and dynamic person. Above all, she’d be resolute, and she’d stick to her plan no matter what anyone threw at her.
>The Sentry famously was a story about secrets being uncovered. Do you think the many retcons that Carol Danvers has gone through over the years make her particularly well-suited for a "hidden secrets" story, as well?I’d say there’s a ton of really interesting things in her past that I’m using as fuel for this type of story. But this is not just a retrospective - she is Captain Marvel now, not Ms. Marvel or Binary. I’m focusing on who she is, but with a twist: we get to see Carol piece together some aspects of her former life. Remember, in her Ms. Marvel days she was an investigative reporter who had once worked in military intelligence, so she knows how to put pieces together.>Lucas Werneck has really made a name for himself on a number of major projects at Marvel. What has it been like to work with one of Marvel's top current artists on this project?Lucas’s art is phenomenal - I can’t think of a better description. What amazes me is how Lucas matches form and function, like so many great comic artists. What I mean by that is he can tell a story, he knows how to make the characters “act,” and he knows how to lay out a page. Storytelling is a big half of the job. So, when you add his beautiful rendering on top of his storytelling chops, you have a fantastic artist. I’m a pretty lucky writer right now.
>There is a long history of notable comic book writers eventually becoming notable editors, as well, but the amount of notable comic book writers who STARTED as editors is a lot smaller, and you're one of the most notable examples. How do you think your time as an editor has best served you in your career as a writer? That’s a great question! I think it taught me how to create for my editors. I know some of the small details, and I know just how hard they work to help deliver a book that the fans will like. Alanna Smith and our assistant editor, Sidney Stubbs, are fantastic - they’ve allowed me to say something interesting while carefully guiding me if I get something about the character wrong. I’d also say that I was lucky enough to be an editor for some amazing comic greats, both artists and writers. I learned so much from see how they went about their business.
>You're also returning to the Sentry, as well. What has it been like to return to the character after he has become such a world-famous character due to the Thunderbolts* film? It’s been great… long overdue, maybe? I am really happy with how Sentry’s turning out. Again, I was allowed to write him in the way I normally do without having to address much of the continuity. It’s a sort of evergreen story, I think. The best part is seeing that he has a whole new set of fans who are just discovering him for the first time. Thunderbolts* was a very good film, and I think Jake Schroeder, the director, and Lewis Pullman really made Sentry memorable.>It sounds like your Sentry story is almost the opposite of the Carol story, in terms of using continuity, as it sounds like your Sentry miniseries is sort of its own thing, apart from any specific continuity (like the most recent Sentry miniseries). That was much how the original Sentry series worked, and that was obviously such a blast. What can fans expect in terms of the emotional center of the new series?I’ll give you a little teaser: fans are going to be upset with me because I’m pretty sure this story is going to make a lot of people cry. I’ve seen art now for three issues and there are some moments that are going to hurt. We learn a little about the Sentry’s childhood, and something that he feels is the first time the Void entered his heart. The event in question is something that affected me greatly when I was a kid. So, perhaps in this case art imitates life. :)
