>>152456883Well for starters, this just isn't the same setting as the movie, straight up. There's a lot more magic, technology and high fantasy elements to the series which were not present before nor alluded to. This is honestly forgivable in my eyes, as I imagine it would've been difficult to write a semi-serialized fantasy adventure show for kids without expanding upon the setting's magic in some way. Not a deal-breaker by any means, but it is still something that's a bit dissonant. What isn't as forgivable is how the show's writting tends to be overly-reliant on characters acting stupid/out-of-character to make certain jokes, scenes or entire conflicts function. Perfect example is the first episode which tries to sell the audience on the idea that Eugene, the man who'd lived under a false identity for most of his life, would be bad at keeping secrets all so that Cass can appear justified in forcing Raps to keep the truth from him (I could honestly write a whole post about how shitty Cass acts in the few episodes). This gets even worse in a later episode when Eugene is perfectly capable of keeping Lance's true name a secret, it's as if they only wrote Eugene as a blabbermouth to make that specific conflict in that specific episode work, because that's exactly what happened. None of it is enough to kill my enjoyment of the show, but there's noticably less care and attention put into the character-writing compared to the film.

If anything, I’m more annoyed Eugene is written way more incompetent and dimwitted than the movie. It feels like it’s done to prop up Rapunzel and Cassandra to be more right in the story. Like, if Cass was really this worried over getting in trouble over sneaking out then I don't think it makes sense for her to even suggest the idea to begin with. According to some of the production info I found, Cass being Gothel's daughter and her betraying Rapunzel was something that was thought up as early as the show's pitch. What wasn't figured out yet was how much awareness Cass had of her own lineage or how antagonistic she was going to be leading up to her heelturn. It's no coincidence that the episode where she begins to mellow out towards Eugene is the same episode where she confirms she never knew her own parents. My guess is the reason why early Cass feels so off-kilter is because the show's writer hadn't figured out yet what exactly they wanted Cass to be and were leaving the door open for a character that was much more nasty and cold than what we ended up getting.

Show ends with many former antagonists getting reformed off-screen in a blink and you miss it moment that one guy who was Eugene's doppelgänger ended up happy with his ex-girlfriend Its the little things. Too bad I had problems with S3. The show was at its best mid to end S1 and S2 (minus the island arc, not bad just went on too long). Music was solid from start to finish at least.
