My theory on what’s happening here is that, he wants to make a few jokes about some of his personal experiences with dating. But he’s trying not to flub it in an embarrassing way like the last time the subject came up. So now he’s trying to make the girlfriend character and the circumstances of their meeting exaggerated and cartoonish in some ways, with maybe just a little hint of things that might’ve really happened to him. Pic related is from an arc he was clearly trying to enter just before his hiatus. It’s been widely speculated that his breakup from the relationship referenced here is at least a part of why he took such a long break from the comic. I think he may be trying to draw a little inspiration from his real world experience, maybe with this relationship, maybe with another. But he’s mostly prioritizing keeping a big emotional distance from his last relationship crashout. And that’s why the girl is a silly orb person just like his own silly orb persona.
