A big part of the plot is "the people around me are assholes, how will the main character work around this?"It would be like if someone made Gargoules and half the cast is Puck and every episode is just trying to over come his bullshit.Anyway. >>152470039I wouldn't know first hand how accurate it is for the black experience, but I think part of it is, if you'll excuse the term, white privilege in where white characters can be awful pieces of shit without it being an indictment on all white people. If you watch something like Simpsons for example, you don't take every negative trait to the white characters to be "ha, white people sure are obnoxious!" but with any non white one there's a bit of a filter where you see a character portrayed and then run their personality by stereotypes to see if anything matches.I always think of something as simple as a missing father being part of the backstory for a character. Luke Skywalker is living with his aunt and uncle, never met his dad but finding out about him and getting the drive to follow in his footsteps is an admirable thing. But a black character, even if it's in a fantasy sci fi setting with the same setup just invites jokes of "Well of course Jerome's dad ran out on him and his mom, they're black!".It's just a pity that we can't look at characters on their own terms or in a vacuum.
