When I purchase a dvd or download a dvdrip, how am I supposed to know if I'm watching the true version or the cropped version?
>>
Widescreen is the intended version that was shown in theaters.
>>
>>152470166
Except when it isn't
>>
>>152470114
I don't know about the download, but most reputable dvd cases will have widescreen or full screen written on them and if not full screen it'll say standard. I've accidentally bought a few pan and scans in my day.
>>
>>152470166
widescreen is cropped
>>
>>152470114
this shit is criminal
they ruined dbz
>>
>>152470184
Was A Bug's Life's original theatrical run in 1.33:1?
>>
With modern TV screens and monitors being rectangular, you don't want full screen movies. It's stretched and looks nasty.

>this shit is criminal

It truly is

The fullscreen version crops the sides.
>>
>>152470241
how tf can I enjoy the actual real movie then
>>
>>152470252
The real version would be the one that is closest to the original theatrical version which is widescreen.
>>
>>152470264
I don't want to watch a cropped version and widescreen is cropped
>>
>>152470272
All movies are intentionally cropped and don't include everything that the cameras pick up.
>>
>>152470239
Look at the post again.
What's it say?
>and monitors
Do you still a crt monitor?
>>
>>152470114
>>152470226
Are these real or am I being trolled? It seems unlikely anyone would bother producing "open matte" versions of CG animation.
>>
>>152470288
fullscreen dvd shows everything though

Cars is the last Disney movie to have a VHS release.
>>
>
You know why. They don't want you to be able to upscale the image and have better clarity.
>>
>>152470585
This. They're competing with their own past so they need to make the past look worse.
>>
>>152470252
You need both versions on 2 TVs next to each other playing simultaneously
>>
>>152470202
It really is. I still can't believe there isn't a good release of Dragon Ball without all this shit.

This can't be real

That's how we watched movies at home in the 90s.
>>

There was indeed a pan-and-scan VHS release of Blade Runner, but notice how much lower quality the picture is in the widescreen VHS version:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT9DLbSCRjo

Remember we were only dealing with 480i back then. Pan-and-scan was common because even though it cropped the picture, it looked better. Plus you were probably only watching on like a 24" TV so letterboxed widescreen on a 4:3 screen looked tiny.

I saw Bridget’s Fonda’s ass in the theater and it’s cropped out in the blu ray.
>>
>>152472727
Have you tried the VHS?
>>
>>152470226
>>152470114
It depends.....movies stopped being shot natively in widescreen after the 50s, even Enter the Dragon was shot on open matte Fullscreen.
>>
>>152470241
Then why not just show the full 16:9?
>>
>>152471692
Depends on the movie, sometimes the Fullscreen would be a combination of Open Matte and Pan & Scan.
>>
>>152470114
Wasn't A Bugs Life recomped and rendered for both full and wide screen?
>>
>>152472845
>why are they cutting off the top and bottom?
>is there something wrong with my TV?
>I paid for the whole screen so I should get the whole screen
Plus TV screens were a lot smaller back then so a even smaller picture on an already small screen makes for worse viewing
>>
>>152472939
I didn't give a fuck back then.

Just remember there is a difference between animating in 4:3 but intentionally framing the movie for 16:9 and intentionally cropping 4:3 footage to 16:9.
>>
Why was this a problem back then?
>>
>>152475733
4:3 TVs were low resolution and have small screens, there is a reason why Kubrick made sure that his movies could be seen in full screen despite him insisting to every movie theatre to screen his movies in European widescreen or as close as it could (5:3 ,which is close to 16:9 but with small vertical bars).
>>
>>152474421
Those movie guides were made only after the first ones because before the framing was pretty damn bad, and even with some they still looked too cropped, also they end up masked to be close to VistaVisa format then 16:9

That ant lady Is really sexy, ngl.
