>You've just been reminded that Sony shitcanned a Popeye movie in 2014, that was effectively complete and made by Genndy Fucking Tartakovsky, because it wasn't woke enough.
I'm still fucking mad
Equally mad that they've scrubbed the leaked animatic (with completed audio) from the internet, probably so they can launch a different Popeye in a few years with a black Bluto and hispanic Olive Oyl.
Wanted to show a friend tonight and couldn't, it's even been scrubbed from the Internet Archive. Anyone got a link?

>because it wasn't woke enough
Was that actually why? Because fuck.

Here is your reminder that next year the Emoji Movie turns 10
>>
>>152474850
It was horrible. Popeye is not a young man with no pipe who twats around in a slapsticky fashion but never actually punches anybody. I’m surprised they didn’t fucking give him two eyes.
>>
>>152474996
I watched the whole thing when it leaked, and it was decent. It was about as respectful as it could be to the source material without being dated.
>>
>>152475093
What is dated about Popeye? I understand the pipe but everything else is just standard cartoon shit.
>>
>>152474993
That movie needed to happen, people were worshipping 3DCG too hard
>>
>>152475143
The characters are drawn with form and modern characters need to be flat icons with perfectly circular eyes. People don't actually watch those shows, but when surveyed they say the design feels modern.
>>

It wasn't Emoji Movie enough
>>
>>152474955
Almost certainly. The full animatic was done, as was all the voice work and audio. The animation test had been done, so models were complete too. All that was left was the final animation and then marketing.
Sony have never given a reason for cancelling it, and with so much of the work having already been done, we're left to speculate on why they would drop something already so far into development. Having watched the animatic, the quality was high and the movie would have done well, however it is notable in what it refreshingly lacks - it's wholesome, has no shoehorned politics, and most shockingly of all, everyone is white. There's no diversity, and while she's not exactly a damsel in distress they didn't make Olive Oyl a grating girlboss either. In fact, she's actually quite likeable.
If that's not the reason they dumped it, I'll eat my hat.
>>
There was a comment from someone who worked on the movie, showing off some concepts for this and one of the reasons why it was cancelled was “kids don’t know what sailors are”
>>
>>152474850
You forgot they canceled it for The Emoji Movie.
>>
>>152476605
Forgot? What?
No, that's not even a reason. There's zero reason they couldn't have done both, even if they thought they might conflict at the box office, they simply delay the release of one of the movies. It happens all the time.
>>
>>152475813
How the fuck do they not?

>>152475779
It could be that. Woke is the predominant religion of Hollywood after all, but I think the reasons it was cut were simpler and more mundane than that.

Much, much simpler retardation

>I'm still fucking mad

You're also really fucking stupid because there's no way that was the reason for it being cancelled. That same time period had Sony flailing around by picking up, delaying. and cancelling things left and right while okaying sequels to pretty much any of their earlier releases that showed a pulse at the box office.

Hell, I think around the same time they delayed Popeye for about the third time, they cancelled Lauren Faust's Medusa pitch, and then tried to sign a deal to make The Playmobile Movie while also sitting on the rights to make both Mario and Sonic films for so long that they lapsed and went to other studios.
>>
>>152477180
Yeah they were being fucking retarded, but their flailing around was all early stage. Most of the work on Popeye had been done.
Also, for the record, calling someone really fucking stupid and that there's "no way" their reason is correct, then completely failing to give any reason at all why that's the case, shows you up as a complete imbecile. You're a tourist defending pedophiles, probably a tranny, and you don't belong here. Go back to r/mtf or wherever else you crawled out from, you soul-crushing disappointment of a human being.
>>

>>152475093
Genndy wouldn't understand Popeye if Segar himself beat him with a pillowcase full of spinach cans
>>
>>152477228

Okay, what sounds more reasonable here:

A company with well known incompetent leadership that made a ton of bad business decisions made another one.

or

A company cancelled a film that was delayed multiple times because it wasn't "woke" enough even though a bunch of their other films at the same time had while male characters as the leads.

Frankly, I can't decide if your parents punched you in the head too much as a kid or not enough.
>>
>>152477300
Wrong, samefag
>>
>>152477345
Not enough to sink to your level of retardation, obviously.
>>
>>152474850
>because it wasn't woke enough
Fucking retard.
>>
>>152474955
No, Anon is just trying to drudge up culture war BS.
>>
>>152477570
That’s your shit
>>
An animatic by no means means the work was almost done and that one definitely wasn't, it was going off temp tracks and I'm gonna tell you for a fact Tom Kenny was not going to be Popeye over any bigger name that could half ass do the voice

So the voice work was not done, the music was not done and the animation sure as shit was not done
>>
>>152475093
> as respectful as it could be to the source material without being dated
Opinion discarded. Popeye is Popeye. If you can't handle him then don't watch it.

>Popeye and Bluto didn't have a fistfight in the movie.
Probably the biggest problem I had with the animatic.

Since 2016, I still never understood why people gave this much of a shit about the canned Popeye movie. Realistically had it been released there's no doubt that it would've been chock full of stupid pop culture references, mostly shitty licensed pop songs or songs from the 70s that the kids' parents might recognize. Unfunny moments that would make you either cringe or just roll your eyes at. A lackluster story. Most movies that use old cartoons or comics tend to be shit at the end of the day, and the only movies based off of old comics that ended up being remotely decent was the Peanuts movie by Blue Sky, and Captain Underpants by DreamWorks, and Bad Guys too if that counts.

Would it have been better than that bile the Emoji Movie? Debatable, and that movie was absolute hippopotamus shit. But I'm not going to pretend that Sony/Tartakovsky's canned Popeye movie was going to be this hit masterpiece that you retards keep thinking it would've been.
