Now that the run's almost over the marriage deadenders finally caught on that Hickman never had any intention of writing a "family man Peter Parker" stories. Just depressing politics and a guy who rarely actually wins and feels like a supporting character in his own book.
For me it was the horrible pacing choice of doing one issue = one in-story month that doomed USM, It made it so everything had to happen super fast and huge chunks of time and stories were just skipped.People wanted weekly / bi weekly / monthly adventures of Peter and family doing superhero shit, not for it to all be glossed over to get to the ~real story~. Ultimates is just a big NOTHING. It didn't give writers enough creative freedom to get weird with the material like DC's Absolute line. Winter Soldier Wolverine was fine in concept, but that X-Book is kinda undermined by the Peach Momoko X-Men book. Who cares if someone makes a great character when someone else will brutally kill them off? Yes, comics are by many creators but the illusion that it's all one story used to sustain it more. Now each creative team is so extremely different that it has harmed the creative ideas people make. The multiplication effect of bigger, crazier changes makes it harder for people to enjoy a simple story or good character arc. There is a lot of entrenched problems and the "don't stress" attitude doesn't really change these issues.

Completely skipped over Peter becoming Spider-Man and actively stopping crimes, immediate and prospective fan favorites like Ultimate Shocker lost all potential for proper screen time, they had to be quickly jetisoned out of the Ultimate Sandman plot to keep up with the time scale, and stories like Ultimate Kraven just kinda got really awkward due to the timeframe of things. Then the latter half clearly suffered because oop we can't do anything of consequence because we have Ultimate Incursion and Ultimate Endgame coming up.
