Can someone suggest me some good Superman comics? I'm trying to get into comics as an oldfag and newfag and it's been interesting. I've only ever seen the cartoons and old movies. I just read this and it was really moving and loved it.
I was fond of this as a kid even though Tim Sale drew him like a downie and it's the source of the famous Super Retard panel
>>152549471Pic related is my favorite.
>>152549482>famous Super Retard panelCan you post it all I can find are real chad retards for some reason.
>>152549482>>152549488Also thanks I'll check these out.I also read DC Frontier and loved it too if that helps or matters.
I'd suggest looking at the Triangle Era and going through there. You can start at Byrne's Man of Steel if you want an origin but I don't think there's much to be explained really at this point. Stuff like All Star, All Seasons, Red Son are all well and good but I feel like the trouble with recommending them is that once you're finished you're basically back at square 1. So Triangle is a good consistent era of comics to just read through. The Tomasi and Jurgens rebirth era are nice too if you want something newer.
sharing these while I'm here. I did not make either.
Honestly despite any Crisis related shenanigans Superman is probably one of the easiest characters to read. You could even just start with the current run. I wouldn't put it with the all time greats but it's been readable
>>152549587I wouldn't recommend the current run to my worst enemy. We should certainly spare people we don't hate such mediocrity.
>>152549471Superman strength by Scott mcloud The busiek Superman/johns action era is solidLoeb’s SupermanLoeb’s Superman/batman Loeb’s for all seasonsSegal’s short run with the McDaniel art Kryptonite by Cooke and sale from Superman confidential (a nice series of short, 2 or 3 issue stints by various creative teams. Sale and Cooke had a 7 or 8 parter with kryptonite)Avoid anything from 2011-2016Avoid anything after April 2018 to nowAvoid birthrightAvoid American alienAvoid secret identity (just read busiek’s regular run it’s better) >>152549565Triangle era is good, but it’s a tough sell for new readers. Spans 3 titles and it’s laden with crossovers. Also the immonen art after his return is rough.
>>152549542
>>152549639>Triangle era is good, but it’s a tough sell for new readers. Spans 3 titles and it’s laden with crossovers. It's not so self contained as a mini series or special but I'd like to suggest people actual runs of the comic. Once people actually sit down and read things as they come I don't think they'll have any trouble following it. Comics always look more confusing or intimidating than they actually are. People like to over explain or over recommenced too much history too fast. Just take things slowly and they'll learn as we did.
>>152549471If you're looking for serial Superman comics that are beginner friendly and solid, then Adventures of Superman (volume 2) and Superman Adventures (especially if you like STAS) is good stuff if you want to dip your feet into something other than Superman graphic novels or collections
>>152549682>I'd like to suggest people actual runs of the comicI agree, which is why I did that. The triangle era is one of the most convoluted to follow and is based on years of build up. It’s a solid era, but it’s not the best place for a new reader to start.
>>152549639Secret Identity is better than most of the ones you're recommending.
>>152549710>The triangle era is one of the most convoluted to followThat's why the triangle. It's actually very easy to follow. >but it’s not the best place for a new reader to start. You can start with the Byrne and Exile for an easier transition into it but this whole time period was exactly a new start.
>>152549471Superman comics that are okay to skip until you've exhausted the ones that are actually great:Superman For All SeasonsKryptonite by Darwyn CookeBirthright by Mark WaidLex Luthor: Man of Steel by AzzarelloKingdom Come is okay. The art's better than the writing. Also: read this fancomichttps://www.lulu.com/shop/ed-pinsent-and-mark-robinson/silver-age-superman-2020-reprint/paperback/product-qjn6qk.html?page=1&pageSize=4
>>152549753I do not get the hype for this book to this day, it's ok, but other than having a semi-interesting plot, it is so mediocre that I do not get why people glaze it like it's one of the greatest comics you could read, like what makes it good other than the meta commentary stuff?
a single issue that strike at the core of what Superman is and nobody remembers it but me
>>152549780>Kryptonite by Darwyn CookeThat Cooke didn't draw this really disappoints and confuses me. I mean I like Tim Sale fine but still.
>>152549753No the fuck it isnt. You just like it because it isn’t a typical cape comic.
>>152549488Seconding this. And the other Alan Moore super man annual comic story, The Jungle Line.
>>152549780>I came ITT to start shit so what?Kys
How bad is Superman: Space Age?
>>152549888I am not a fan of Allred
>>152550073I kinda like his style.
>>152549758I'm starting with this one because it had a gorilla on the cover
>>152549888I don't like Mark Russell.
Pretty much everything since Rebirth has been pretty good Superman stuff.
>>152550178I think DC in the past few years has, for the most part, been strongly OKAY.
>>152549710>>152549758OP here I actually tried that but ended up reading Morrison's Doom Patrol and Flex Mentallo and realized I hate extemely dark subject matter in comics. (Teen Titans cartoon was my shit growing up and I know where Beast Boy came from and I just thought the 80s looked cool. ) Which is now why I'm going to Superman to cleanse my brain lol. So anyways I'm all for suggestions on runs. Also tried New Gods from the 70s and realized 70s writing is not really for me. Unless Miracle Man and Big Barda is more fun to read? I fucking love New Gods world building and seeing them in other stuff like Batman Beyond. And I'm a fucking JRPG weeb I actually love convoluted bullshit. Most of it never is even that bad you just have to fucking read/watch the extra shit. Actually it's even worse here because it has un translated things.
Bronze Age Superman is great, Curt Swan was still doing excellent art and you had writers like Maggin, Bates, Conway, and Pasko bringing life to Superman and his supporting cast.
>>152550410I picked up the DC Finest and liked it a lot. I hope they put out more.
The most headache induscings ever really get is Zero Hour and just... man fuck Zero Hour
>>152549471Siegel. Pick up the first volume of daily strips.>frequently trolls people>takes on bankers, wifebeaters, mobsters>satisfying use of powers, more grounded in physical realityNot to mention, its the OG.
>>152549758Wait hold the fuck up is this a gorilla or a n word
>>152551019Some kind of cave Polynesian
>>152549471I don't know a lot of them but I will say that: "For the Man Who Has Everything" and "Whatever Happened to the Msn of Tomorrow" are both awesome.
>>152549653Oh, I thought you meant that one where he looks like a hulking gorilla in a China shop next to Pa Kent.
It's widely considered a bad comic but I found Superman: At Earth's End a fun romp.
Ok. I'm Superbump this thread.
>>152549686great choice in that image, both adventure titles are good.
>>152550196>>152550178Quit fucking talking shill. Outside of tomasi and gleason’s rebirth run Superman and action have been shit since 2011. 2018-now is probably the weakest the books have been in 40 years. Bendis, PKJ and Taylor absolutely killed any momentum they had and it hasn’t gotten any better.
>>152549888Genuinely terrible. Russell should stick to writing OCs. Every time he writes and established character it’s odious nonsense. Priests “Lost” is worse though. Seriously just stick to comics from before flashpoint when it comes to DC.
>>152553637This. Once Bendis took over, there was never anything that reached the same heights as the start with Tomasi.
>>152553637Tomasi is incredibly overrated. Jurgens run was better. PKJ was pretty good for most of Warworld. Williamson has been the best Superman in over a decade.
>>152553787Everything you said is pure bait. Kill yourself.
>>152553787Warworld only exists to push the Kid Jon replacements no one likes or cares about. All in a John Carter of Mars reference package. Something that would've only been cool pre-Flashpoint.
>>152553823>Posts plebbit opinion>Gets mad when he's pointed at and laughed at
>>152549579I did not care for kingdom come.
>>152553999>laughed at Funny I don’t see you laughing in that post. Just baiting.
>>152549471Superman: Strength
>>152553999Reddit loves PKJ and Williamson though, go back.
>>152551628I have a theory that this was intended to be a maxi-series like Kamandi at Earth's End, which was really good, but they weren't allowed to cook.
>>152554176I agree.>the preacher believes non of the bible is real, so all the religious symbolism is as hollow as Eva's>Diana is a psycho>"CABLE IS BAD RIGHT FELLOW BOOMERS?">Superman throws a temper tantrum because of one court case (and this is post-Crisis so we know that Joker has killed hundreds and isn't just a wacky Silver Age prankster)>Billy getting raped>J'onn getting raped>ending doesn't resolve what is presented as the core problem of the setting (more metahumans popping up everywhere)>50 billion superhero kids, none of whom matter because the boomer heroes are the protagonists and provocateurs
>>152554478The old man's lack of belief doesn't make the religious symbolism moot. It's still symbolism showing the decline of civilization. The resolution is that all the fighting just destroyed all sides & there's a loose peace now.
>>152554572>>152554572>The old man's lack of belief doesn't make the religious symbolism moot. The atheist writing the barely-theist and putting out cheap bible references does make the symbolism moot. It's insincere slop.>The resolution is that all the fighting just destroyed all sides & there's a loose peace now.But it didn't destroy all sides: It just weakened them. None of the underlying issues were resolved . . . Which is how WW1 ended and why there was a WW2.
>>152549790It's alright. I think it's marketed for new readers, hence all the hype.>>152549806It's a decent, typical comic. Like an Elseworlds. Atypical would be more like It's a Bird.
>>152554353>Plebbit loves Tomasiftfy
Alan Moore's run on Supreme is just Moore telling a Superman story and it was really good. It doesn't have a proper conclusion to the final arc though.>>152549482>>152549488These are also favorites of mine.>>152550236>70s writing is not really for meIt could just be that Kirby isn't for you. The man was a great artist but I could never get into his writing.
>>152549471john byrne and geoff johns runs are good.
>>152554478I think they actually gave Magog some nuance. He could have been another Manchester Black but he was downright remorseful.
>>152555519Superman seems to bring out the best in even those cynical British invasion guys. Even Ennis.
>>152555756>john byrneI read the Man of Steel omnibuses and thought the Ordway Adventures of Superman stories were better than the Byrne ones.
>>152549686>Superman Adventures (especially if you like STAS) is good stuff if you want to dip your feet into something other than Superman graphic novels or collectionsThanks a lot its definitively the animated series nostalgia that brought me into comics. I had nostalgia for the Big O which led me to rewatch old Bruce Timm cartoons. And I'm actually reading The Adventures Continue on the Batman side of things right now too. Which is pretty neat because its introducing me to all this shit I missed out on for the last 30 years like Azreal (finally all those toys of edgy Batman I had as a kid make sense) and Red Hood.
>>152554359>Kamandi at Earth's End, which was really good, but they weren't allowed to cook.Does anyone have any more good Kamandi suggestions? It was one of the series I wanted to get into too because of BtaB.
>>152549471Anyone else not really like Alex Ross art? His stuff just feels so hermetic and static.
>>152556855The DCA comics were surprisingly good. Usually these kind of things end up being a cheap cash in or worse just picture retelling of the cartoon
>>152557016Your criticism might be valid but I love his art so much
>>152557016>hermeticLook at Mr Word of the Day calendar over here.
>>152557028It was genuine suprise how much good stuff is in it, especially for characters like Mr. Mxyzptlk and Toyman who were a bit underserved in the series in terms of episode count. It makes me wish that they adapted some of these plots into the show, iby either getting another season or a larger episode count
>>152557016His art is no more static than literally every comic on the stands. I don’t know why people always say this. Compared to manga? Sure. But there is not w single artist on an ongoing big 2 book that draws kinetic art.
>>152549795I remember it, The City of Tomorrow era was peak for Superman content. There's also, of all fucking people, a Chuck Austen cop story that makes you feel sad, it's in Man of Steel I think
>>152554176Yeah the writing was shit but it's worth a flip through for the art.Especially that page with Shazam, you know the one it's always in the one page threads.
>>152557498man it's so crazy to think that once upon a time Loeb was actually good
>>152557671I don’t think it’s all that crazy. There’s not a single writer from the last fifteen years that’s on his level.
>>152556458The reality is that writing Superman, the quintessential superhero, reflects the writer's feelings towards the genre in its purest form. Ennis is not a fan of superheroes like the others, but he has enjoyed the occasional cape comic.
the 78 comics were kind of net
>>152559295*neat
>>152558095Dan Watters?
It was cute
>>152559670I really liked dark patterns and his cyberpunk mini but not even close
I liked a lot of early Byrne where he's just arrived and kind of goofing off
>>152558095How about Gene Luen Yang?
>>152549471Get any issue of DC Comics Presents from the 80's. Solid, self-contained Superman teamup stories from top creators. You can't go wrong.
>>152562132The DC Finest Team Up is also really good.
>>152555519>Alan Moore's run on Supreme is just Moore telling a Superman story and it was really good.Fuck yes. Supreme is the single best Superman story ever told, and far and away my favorite peice of Moore work. The trick is to just read the first series (Story of the Year). It completes itself perfectly and nothing after it really matches it. The second, unfinished bit had some good ideas, but I think it reads a bit like "here's all the other Superman idea's I had that didn't fit in SotY, have those I guess!"
>>152562181The only problem is all the non-Veitch art.
>>152549471Choose one. They're all sucks.
>>152562181>Supreme is the single best Superman story ever toldIm so sick of faggots saying dumb shit like this. Up there with >i-i-incredibles is the best FF movie! >>152562065Lol no
>>152563501>Choose one. They're all sucksWhy thank you saar I will.
>>152549758>SUPERMEN ARE STEALING OUR WOMEN!
>>152563871Moore's Supreme is an obvious reskin of Superman. The Incredibles is too different from FF.
>>152558916Amano?
>>152565557looks like.
>>152563871Anon, Supreme is blatantly Moore using Liefeld's edgy Superman expy to tell a silver age Superman story. While I wouldn't say that it is the best Superman story ever told personally it a completely reasonable thing to say.The Incredibles thing is just retarded.
>>152549471Here is the thing about DC and marvel comic books, except for the classics, continuity is a fucking shitshow. A flamboyant mess full of contradictions, else worlds and whatnot. That being the case i´d advise to read enough of the classics to get the core idea behind the characters and then explore self contained arcs that seem interesting. Like Red Son and Kingdom come are absolutely great but you just won´t get the full experience if you are not at least familiar with the regular version of things.
>>152549471I don't like that one.
>>152567291So?
>>152566286>>152564767>The Incredibles thing is just retardedIt’s the same type of statement.
>>152554176Same.
>>152566387I think there needs to be at least some pretense of a continuity but people treat it as either a joke or a noose. There needs to be a better balance. I don't care if you change the name of Superman's third grade teacher from a book 60 years ago but at least keep it straight within the current decade

>>152549682What was DC's plan with Mr Z? Was he to replace Brainiac, who was ruined by Byrne? Mr Z was kind of like Vandal Savage but Nazi. Then he gets a happy ending and is never seen again!
