>Jim Lee, DC Comics President, Chief Creative Officer, and Publisher, spoke to Nikkei XTrend about his career, current trends, and the disadvantages that Japanese manga and anime have over Western comics and cartoons.

>The disadvantages that Japanese manga and anime have over Western comics. Lee says that Japanese storytelling (and Asian content more broadly) is sinking into the abiss because young people want to discover something that is “uniquely their own,” perhaps rather than just inheriting current trends, and because of the nature of the stories compared to Western comics suck, Casper, Baby Huey, Popeye/Thimble Theatre, Peanuts, Felix The Cat and Carl Barks/Don Rosa's Disney Duck comics all rock socks when Japan never made anything this cool unless Americans like Tom Ruegger are in charge.

>The stories told in Japanese manga and anime are incredibly lame (Tezuka and the Fujio duo excluded). I often find myself wondering, ‘What is missing in Japanese comics, and why aren’t they able to achieve the same flavor?’ Also, I think manga doesn't has an ‘advantage’ over American comics, which are mostly about superheroes while manga is just about fighting and hyper sexualizing, and that’s where the majority of readers are sick.“

>“In Japan, it’s closer to ‘toilet paper,’ and no one wants to read it, and it’s just hero or bimbo stories. There’s a much wider range of genres in the west, like stories about wise cracking rabbits and crazy woodpeckers with a iconic laugh that is world famous. You can draw stories from that. So I’m very happy that the characters has been so successful, because it gives me a ‘goal’ to aim for. The funny animal market is much bigger than the "manga" industry, so the question becomes, ‘What can they learn from this?’“

>Simple, have candy color expies of classic funny animal characters be taught by the real thing a have 3 puppy like children who are zany to the max they have baloney down their slacks live in a water tower pestering people as they please when they escape said water tower

>Lee says that it’s not just art style, but the “sensibility” of Japanese stories that are only good when they using American scripts made by people like Paul Rugg and Sherri Stoner as a base, and later adds, “Another thing to add is that in Japan, comics and animation have been considered ‘children’s and geeks media.’ As people grow up, they move on to live-action and never look back due to very weak leadership in cartoons and comics. But in America, that’s not the case. Not only is there a wide range of genres like stuttering pigs and depressed dogs with god like powers, but adults also read comics like Uncle Scrooge and Barney Google and watch cartoons like The Great Piggy Bank Robbery and Stimpy's Invention. As a culture, it’s an ‘art’ that isn’t limited to a specific age group.“

While its true that anime is beating cape comics on storytelling simply by the fact that they have something to offer than old reheated leftovers from 80 years ago, we just need to be honest about the fact that they are killing it in terms of presentation as well. Anime just does spectacle better than western animation does, using more impact visuals and with an actual focus on the audio aspect of the audiovisual format.
Like, when was the last time you heard a sound track in a cartoon that you'd actually listen to on a walk or something? It basically doesn't happen unless you have a disney musical with a catchy tune. For all of the money spent on it, I can't remember a single track from Invincible's OST. Its all generic.
Meanwhile, anime soundtracks spawn memes and references and sell like gangbusters as products in their own right. And if you have that level of emotional investment in the music, that means you have at least some level of emotional investment in the show it comes from.
>>
>>152555035
Thats only the case when Americans are in charge, with the music there hasn't been any music that "spawn memes and references and sell like gangbusters as products in their own right. And if you have that level of emotional investment in the music, that means you have at least some level of emotional investment in the show it comes from." since Richard Stone's death.

Excluding video games of course.

>Excluding video games of course.
Also a good example. Like, people are still using the Doom 2016 soundtrack in memes because its just that good at what it does. But for some reason cartoons got a whole lotta nothing, unless you are watching a noodle-armed tumblr show and you got a thing for ukeleles.

Honestly, what do you have against manga? You could be having a better time reading both comics and manga, instead of playing these gay little console war games.
>>
>>152555220
Ah, I assumed we were restricting ourselves to western videogames. Its not going to be a surprise that japanese video games likewise have a strong musical focus like anime does, they are both being made by the same culture and in many cases industries with strong crossover.

>I just want /co/ to be a better board
I want 4chan to be a better site. Maybe one that has more than 200 users left on it. Even /a/ has threads that last a week or longer now. There was a time that would have been completely absurd, where you would see threads drop off page 10 without just a few hours if no one bumped them.
>>
>>152554586
>>152554592
Badly disguised west vs east thread

But hes right that the stories are very samey
>>
>>152554586
Disadvantage? Manga tells a continuous story. They're not torn up through multiple lines of comics for one character like comics. That also means they have one creative voice. What is he on?
>>

It's because the new captchas are too hard for the normies. Notice how posting seemed to drop right after captchas were introduced?
>>
>>152555457
it's honestly funny how putting a round peg into a round hole filtered the fuck out of people

Anime ost is also mostly samey slop tho
>>152555457
Its not hard its just annoying
>>
>>152555457
What that tells me is that the site had more bots posting than we realized, and now we are seeing the human userbase that is left.
>>
>>152555528
You think this is stopping bots?
>>
>>152555550
Probably not all of them, but enough of them for the decline to be noticeable. Not all bots are created equal.

Didnt we have this thread twice? Like word for word?

Big O just got me into comics for the first time at the age of 35 because its inspired by Batman and Hellboy. They're pretty good love anime mango and comics and cartoons. I'm just hoping this post somehow negatives stupid retarded shit slinging but it probably won't.

Manga does what Comicon't

Comics dont have blast processing you're all a bunch OF NERDS and dweebs

OP is just having a laugh. I admit I glossed over the edited text initially since it's based on some old material that was being used as EAST VS WEST bait. Do not be fooled by OP's lies!

>have candy color expies of classic funny animal characters be taught by the real thing a have 3 puppy like children who are zany to the max they have baloney down their slacks live in a water tower pestering people as they please when they escape said water tower
Got a chuckle out of me.

Other way around.
Manga never had anything like Carl Barks and Don Rosa.

That is the god's honest truth.

Nah its Famicom being autistic again

One of manga advantage that is less talked about is that it can quickly change and adapt to modern trends. Comics feels like a continuous thing since the 40s with just updated print tech. Manga now are already different from 2000s manga or 90s manga.

I was obviously joking and love both lol. Tezuka made this for Carl Barks.
