Do you prefer maximalist or minimalist art in comics? Or do you like both?

It depends. I think coloring is really the thing that makes or breaks a lot of comic art. Legibility is what is most important when it comes to visual storytelling, but even a busy Darrow illustration could be read just as fast as something simple like Asterios polyp if the coloring is correct.

In my opinion, the artistic style and its level of detail should be in relationship with the story being told and the feelings that the author wants to convey to the reader. Sometimes simple lines are enough to achieve the goal; other times, more elaborate drawings are required to enrich the visual narrative.

Personally, I prefer comics that aspire to a complex worldbuilding to have an elaborate artwork that's pleasing to my eyes. On the other hand, if the story focuses on the emotional and/or psychological struggles of a single character, I like the art to lean towards abstraction to represent the human mind.

Anyone who uses this term can safely be disregarded.

Sometimes I wish more comics were in black n white, and not because of muh manga comparisons, I just think inks on their own can look super nice

Retard alert.

I like both, but I love the style in your OP pic. Reminds me of Moebius or Adamoff. What's it from?

I prefer Darrow when he's illustrating a more intelligent writer than Frank Miller
The same goes for Quitely

>this term makes no sense to me and I'm the main character so it's meaningless!
Other kids needed to hit you more as a child until you didn't think you were so special any more.

In general I just prefer more detail than less. Like I've never been found of Mike Mignola's art style because he clearly uses an over reliance on shadows to avoid drawing more than necessary. The almost wood carving look he draws characters in can be kinda cool but only when he gives enough of a shit to to make them look nice & not scribbles like on his covers.

Hard Boiled by Geof Darrow and Frank Miller

When was this?
I didn't know know Quitely worked with Frank Miller.
>>
>>152562350
It depends on the story
>>
>>152565858
He didn't, I'm saying Quitely deserved a better writer for All-Star Superman. Not that Morrison was bad, but maybe someone a little better.

Mike's heard this joke before but he'd be better off buying black paper and white ink. And yes he's deliberately mimicking wood engraving instead of actually biting the bullet and entering it like my high school art teacher Barry Moser did. But not for comic books, I don't know if he could afford boxwood blocks that large.

Nice art.

I do think coloring comics can elevate the art, but you need a good colorist. Usually you’re better off with black and white with screen tones.
>>
>>152562350
For me, more is better. I'm a sucker for insane levels of detail. Minimal can have it's charms though, and there is such a thing as complex simplicity.

>>152566767
I think linoleum would capture fine lines adequately to copy a master from..
>>
>>152562350
Depends entirely on the context, they're both great for different things. Maximalism's great for when you want a setting to feel gritty and dirty, or just to make something feel "off". Minimalism's more practical and better for more lighthearted fare.

Orchard of the Tame.

Who's better than Morrison?
>>
both
>>
>>152562350
Middle but I'll lean towards more minimal art because busy art feels distracting and takes me out of the story.

I got the comic for the art and i swear the pages need to be twice as big. The details are so small and fine that i can hardly see them. Makes me feel like an old person putting my face so close to the book. Its pretty neat though. Story is meh despite it being frank miller

My favourite comicbook artist is Tim Sale (RIP) because of the very stylized and exaggerated way he used to draw his characters. The way he draws Joker in The Long Halloween is incredible, with the giant smile and all. So, I don't think minimalist is the right word, but I don't prefer the realistic drawings.
>>
>>152562350
I like when someone who can do both but never ranked them as approaches
>>

>So, I don't think minimalist is the right word, but I don't prefer the realistic drawings
so just stylized drawings with more details?
