Say what you will about chain restaurants, I like some of them. Outback Steakhouse (no rules, just right) and Buca di Beppo are nice. I mean the steak at Outback isn't great, but the sides and desserts are good. I used to like Applebee's, but it's gone way downhill from the 2000s. Had it for the first time in decades recently and it sucked. You used to get an honest to god burger, now you get a cafeteria burger that tastes frozen (whether it is or isn't). The wings used to be better too. Part of it might be my memory is off, but I genuinely think it got worse too.

The reality is most Americans vastly preferred their local chain in terms of taste and quality but that was never the business for a place like Pizza Hut or Domino's. It was always about the affordability of the service allowing you to buy multiple pies for a relatively cheap price for something like a movie night.A few years back, Domino's fucking called it that replacing delivery and pick-up with something like Doordash was gonna kill the entire fucking business model. There was no way around it because additional fees make you wonder why the hell you wouldn't just grab the local slice instead, turning the goal of these chains from "cheap and convenient" to "as cheap and convenient as we can get it compared to the local chain."
