Were we too hard on this movie? I recall everyone being upset that they took too many liberties with the plot and lore. Like they expected it to be like the tv show with Kevin Sorbo.But after it was shown that Aladdin and Hercules are a shared world and an alternate timeline to our own, where none of the religious or political strife of perisa has occurred and Zeus never cheats on his wife, nor do the Greek gods shift into what would be the Roman gods (Rome very well may never become a super power in this timeline) its not really fair, imo, to judge it by other works about the Greek gods or hercules.
Hades is both the best and worst thing about the movie. Theh try to hard to make him Satan like, probably because it was the 90s and the bible belt was still going strong. They make him the god of essentially Heck, and give him 2 little demon guys and make flames appear around him and he likes to bargain with people for their souls.Im not sure if the historical hades was ever that much like the devil. Nor did he give that big of a shit about Hercules or Zeus. In his own mythology he abducted and marries zeus's daughter Persephone. So you would think he'd eventually get over his baggage with Zeus and hercules. Though it is understandable why Disney cut her. You can only get so deep into this stuff before you get into incest.

The French translator for "One Thousand and One Nights" claimed that got the tale from a Syrian storyteller but scholars have no facts backing this up. It's widely believed that he made up the story and added it into "One Thousand and One Nights". I think explains the oddness of the story.

the problem isn't accuracy per se, people now have certain expectations of the greek gods, what a story involving them would entail. having it come down to hades being a stand in for satan, something that stereotypically black in white, fails to meet those expectations.
