Psychologically, availability and kindness make you weak. That's the tragic part. Lucy's an asshole but she spent years conditioning everyone around her into tolerating her, that's just the way he is. At the time, I thought this mis-remembering on Lucy's part was probably deliberate. You know, based on her tendency to blame others (especially right after kicking Mike and seeming to realize she'd gone too far, and because Taeshi made some comment about Lucy wanting to change the subject). But then Taeshi started laying all the blame on Mike both in the page comments and later on tumblr.

I think her plan was to rhyme with December by finally bringing all of Mike's sins crashing down upon his head. The problem being that December was the cresting of a wave that had been very clearly building for some time. What Lucy had done wrong had been made quite apparent long before. Line in the Sand had no such benefit. Whether that was due to Taeshi's overuse of "ambiguous storytelling" or her chronic inability to get a point across even under even the clearest of conditions, or because she finds actually retconning past material too hard, I do not know. But the effective end result is that LitS depended on Taeshi recontextualizing Mike's volume 1 behavior toward Lucy as a damning indictment.

As much as she's been yapping on tumblr about the reactions to LitS, if it was deliberate then she would have said it by now. More than likely she just expected everyone to accept what Lucy was saying as truth, but that didn't happen.


The Manipulator Mike angle cant work without a retcon so big that she would have to make brand new chapters to show it all. It would require more than simple panel removal and word bubble changes.
