>dc started the trend with their compact line
>oni quickly follwed suit pumping out adventure time and rick and morty compacts
>oni also has already announced some archie compacts now that they have the license
>vault comics released 3 compacts last year
>boom studios announced a power rangers compact
>dynamite is going to release a pathfinder and red sonja compacts
It seems Compact Comics are here to stay for at least the next few years. Have you picked up any? What do you think of them? Do you think if Compact sales continue doing well companies will start going from single issues to compacts instead of the traditional trades we are used to?

They're okay for what they are. Downside is that due to modern coloring styles some books don't work well in this format. But for an entry-level line this is fine.

I found the most oblivious people are the ones complaining the most about this kind of line and also happen to be the ones who read comics for years or decades while unable to understand why new people don't get into comics
>>
>>152568381
I have plenty of them here in Europe "compact" 2019-2020-2021
I have the batman ones:

year one
the dark knight returns
the long halloween
dark victory
haunted knight

Also:
Death metal
sandman overutre
first sandman story arc

They need to make comics to fit this format, instead of shrinking bigger art.
>>
>>152568381
They are okay but I think I prefer regular sized TPBs. There's something to the tall book with thin spine that I like, plus color artwork looks better at that size imo.

same
>>
>>152568381
I have the Killing Joke one, they should start putting these on bookstores like how manga does
>>
>>152570679
The DC Compacts are at bookstores. They've been there since at least last year.
>>
I want DC to release the other Earth One GNs as compacts.

No they didn't. Digest size comics have been around for years. Decades.

I don't like the smaller format. DC Finest all day.
>>
>>152572201
Marvel niggers going into every DC thread to cry is becoming fucking annoying.
>>
>>152568381
I think it's cool there's a budget option out there. Comics should always be affordable on a teenager's allowance. They aren't for me but they seem to be reaching an unserved audience

Started/popularised trend =/= Invented.

The current wave of direct market, digest-sized trades were 1,000% popularised by the success of the DC Compact line. Prior to that, in the Western market there were repeated false-starts with the format that went nowhere and died immediately. Archie comics digests (and their collab with Marvel that I was excited for and turned out to be dogshit), Marvel's 2000s Marvel Age line for kids, Dark Horse's small omnibus line (overpriced for the content, even by Direct Market comic standards), etc, etc. All of those went fucking nowhere.

Turns out the answer was to put out the good shit at a good price instead of wet fucking farts. Comic companies wanted to lure in the fresh meat with dogshit and upcharge for the good stuff. Turns out using AIDS needles instead of worms doesn't get the fish to bite.

Just turn Action comics and Detective comic in Shonen Jump-like magazine(or GA magazines)
Books with less quality paper with various C-list heroes back ups and release every 3 month TPB of those heroes
>>
>>152568381
Weren't digest-sized comics already a thing before this?
I know Rebellion published a couple of books in that format, like Shakara, Zombo, The VCs and Judge Dredd/Batman

Very nice. I wish I had my old comics. Used to have old Donald Ducks and some Star Wars ones and I know I had some other shit I can't remember. Nothing valuable but I miss them. There's nothing like that shitty color and feel of older comics. I never appreciated them as a kid because I just wanted the new shiny things but now those old things basically no longer exist and I miss seeing them around even if they were lower quality.
>>
How is Witchblood? The colors look cool on the cover and I almost like the vibes. It looks like it can go either way. Fun or annoying
>>
>>152568381
Did you just learn about “ashcan editions”? They’ve been around forever.
>>
>>152573298
I thought Ashcans were more meant to be a collector thing, you get a cons, not a digest format for reading.
>>
>>152572619
This. Comics should be for the people!

It should always be like this.

Comics are pulp. Comics are disposable. Comics are newsstand junk. Comics are paperback novels.

I certainly understand the value of the "graphic novel" size but cheap pocket sized digests should always be available as an option for comic readers

Trades cost more and take up more space.

anon these exist for the bookstore market. You know they've been selling comics in bookstores since the 80s right?
>>
>>152572455
LOL you retarded american, I am as far from a "marvel nigger" as it's possible to be.
>>
>>152573160
Nah, it's just a reaction to manga tankobon.
>>
>>152568381
Why the fuck are they shrinking the cover art? It's already smaller.
>>
>>152568381
I don't mind them, i'd rather buy a collected story or graphic novel for less than half the shit it would take for me to buy the bigger versions.

>>152568381
Cool
DC should put out Ambush Bug in compact form
>>
>>152574344
Are you going to eat that banana
>>
>>152572201
>>152572209
Yes, and Marvel also put out Mighty Marvel Masterworks a few years ago, which were small sized versions of the Masterworks. But for some reason it and the others never got as much traction as the DC Compact.

Anyone remember the Backpack series, that Marvel put out back around 2000 or thereabouts? They were small volumes in black-and-white, had better paper than the Essentials

>>152574509
It is a reaction to it, but as others pointed out Marvel had been doing it for a while but it never gained traction. I think >>152573160 is on to something but I'll also add that DC probably had a good marketing team for this
>>
>>152574344
I don't know, the Kingdom Come one is pretty good, it's not as good as some of the other covers but it does the job
