Plastic Beach was when character development really mattered in Gorillaz, and that was setting Murdoc up to basically becoming a supervillain running away from an old Faustian bargain, losing his mind, and desperately trying to cling to relevant stardom no matter the cost.

I never liked the fact that the Gorillaz have to share their "lore" with the real world. Honestly think its very restrictive to try and ground them in our world. It would be far more interesting if they straight up lived in their own universe and any IRL celebrities they hang out with are fictionalized versions.
