Thoughts on Maus?
>>
It's an interesting and unapologetic character study of a man's relationship with his incredibly flawed father despite the detailed acknowledgement of the cruel injustice that he faced.

I just wish that the character design was more varied despite the obvious symbolism.

Art's dad was a scummy fuck.

Art's dad is really that much of an asshole.

I'm convinced Vladek was making portions of the story up. Like not in a /pol/ way, but the way he describes himself as surviving and at times even thriving in the camps just because he "knows and can do everything" just seems really unbelievable at times. And if that is the case, it's one of the few times I wouldn't blame someone for it. Vladek was in a fucking concentration camp and survived, so I could absolutely see him building himself up in his memories to cope with the horrors he endured, especially if he carried some survivor's guilt as well (apparently a pretty common experience for Holocaust survivors).

Hello, I'm the Nostalgia Critic. I remember it so you don't have to. Today, we’re looking at Maus by Art Spiegelman. It won a Pulitzer Prize. It’s considered one of the greatest graphic novels of all time. It’s universally acclaimed for its raw, unflinching look at the Holocaust and the generational trauma it left behind. AND IT IS COMPLETELY ONE-SIDED! Now, before you cancel me, let me be very clear: I am NOT talking about the historical events. Obviously, the Nazis were monsters, I'm not an idiot! No, I’m talking about the true victims of this graphic novel... THE ANIMAL KINGDOM! Why are all the cats the bad guys?! I have a tabby! His name is Mr. Whiskers! He wouldn’t build an extermination camp, he gets scared of the vacuum cleaner! This is blatant, one-sided anti-feline propaganda! Where is the "Not All Cats" movement here?! Why couldn't we get the perspective of a nice cat who just wanted to knit? This is zoological slander! And the narrative itself! It’s entirely one-sided towards Artie! Throughout the whole book, it’s just: "Oh, look at me, I’m an angsty artist chain-smoking in a vest, trying to understand my dad." We only get his side of the family drama! "Oh, my dad is so annoying, he won't let me throw away a wooden match, my life is so hard!"
ARTIE, YOUR DAD SURVIVED AUSCHWITZ! If the man wants to save a piece of wire, let him save the piece of wire! You're literally writing a book profiting off his horrific life story, the least you can do is help him fix the roof without complaining for five panels! We never get Vladek's inner monologue about how annoying his cartoonist son is! And the art! It’s a comic book! Where are the splash pages?! Why does it look like something I drew on the back of a napkin at a diner in 1993?! Don't give me crippling generational trauma mixed with a weirdly biased view against Garfield! I'm the Nostalgia Critic... I remember it so you don't have to

The scene where the artist realizes that his mother left him her journals after her suicide and his father threw them all away really stuck with me. After feeling like he failed her in life, he wasn't able to do right by her and tell her side of the story after her death. Like his mom died twice.

Hey wait sec... Where's mid-video skit?
>>
>>152575928
Text size made me cut it out. It was really good too.

Made me chuckle.

I’m hearing this with 2010 NC mic quality

Maus Coda is good for context about publishing Maus but it’s the 2008 version of Breakdown where Art Spiegelman goes into details about growing up with Vladek the man and how Maus emerged from the art and stories Art developed in the 1970s.

I was extremely tired of both holo-core and gulag-core by the time I was made aware that this exists, so I never read it and not planning to, but I can safely assume it's boring and depressing shit like all of those books, movies and comics.
>>
>>152576343
If it makes you feel better, the Holocaust survivor the story is about is recognized in-story as a gigantic asshole that does shitty things and nobody can stand being around him. So it's not just "Holocaust bad Jews good", there's more nuance than what these stories usually have.
>>
>>152575907
I interpreted his demand to leave out the initial part with Lucia Greenberg to indicate that he would be truthful going forward as there would be things he could comfortably let out since he believes they wouldn’t go to print.
>>
One thing I always wondered is why Art's dead brother had a French name if he was Polish.
>>
>>152576618
Neither Vladek nor Anja are Polish spelling but Art used them because they just read and roll off the tongue better. "Richieu" could have been the same creative choice.
>>
Artsy people tend to like France a lot

I remember having to read this in High School. I wasn't too interested in it then, but now that you've reminded me of it I might have to read ot again and see if my opinions have changed.

I hope you get brutally murdered at some point.
>>
>>152575907
I knew two Holocaust survivors, they're both dead now. They were polite in public, but hated each other. One insisted that the other had survived only because he was a collaborator. I think she was probably right, but I can't really blame him. He was a carpenter, and he once told me about building the gallows used to hang other Jews with this haunted look in his eyes.

It's pretty good. Kinda overrated due to the subject matter, doesn't really compare to other holocaust works in other media

The author is a Zionist, ironically.

>he once told me about building the gallows used to hang other Jews with this haunted look in his eyes.
>"For who has served me more faithfully
>Than you with your coward's hope?" said he,
>"And where are the others that might have stood
Side by your side in the common good?"

>"Dead," I whispered; and amiably
>"Murdered," the Hangman corrected me;
>"First the alien, then the Jew...
>I did no more than you let me do."
>Beneath the beam that blocked the sky,
>None had stood so alone as I -
>And the Hangman strapped me, and no voice there
>Cried "Stay" for me in the empty square.

Never read it, but I hear it's controversial literature.

>America is le racist
he can fuck off for that. Who the fuck gets off shitting on the country that takes you in after you've survived a genocide

Was there anyone who liked Vladek Spiegelman? It seems like even before the war he was only tolerated because he had money.
>>
>>152575807
Pussy ass collaborator
>>
A great work that dares to ask the question:
>Can some individuals be so insufferable, they deserve to be Holocausted?
>>

heil mauser
