I thought spongebob in 3d would've felt more soulless like when the pony franchise switched to 3d but spongebob in cgi feels more natural, not sure why.

Maybe that's because, if made right, maintains most of the cartoonish characteristics of their style that it translates well in 3D, and I think this movie made a good job with it and have many funny visual gags, altought I still prefer the 2D, and also the fact that in a first impression technically wise could be looks cheap based on the trailer alone.
