One route would be something that's too malicious for her, something similar to Joker Jr but Tim actually dies as a result of their actions, or something else with kids/innocents being killed without mercy (though I'd avoid this route because I hate grimdark Joker wangst). She reaches the end of her rope, but hasn't sunk so low as to just hold-up a liquor store, so she does the next lowest thing and breaks into a random apartment. She's collecting all kinds of silverware & antiques in a pillow-case when she comes across something that links back to the reason she left the Joker and it has her considering that she doesn't want to be anything like him anymore. She puts back everything that can't be replaced and leaves... only to encounter the Joker again.(continued)

Back to the present, he coolly proclaims that their extended break is over and she's coming back home now, which she refuses. A chase starts but is swiftly ended when one of his bruisers catches her by the hat and slams her into the wall, knocking her out. Joker tries to act like it's all back to normal when she wakes up in whatever hide-out he has now, but the spell's finally been broken for her. When she continues to defy her, he decides to just leave her locked up in her playroom. Long period of her futilely trying to get out with intermittent visits from Joker trying to lull her back into his sway, constantly rebuffed. At one point she gets worried that he might kill her if he doesn't find her funny anymore. Next visit from Joker has her extremely apologetic, and he considers her before saying that she's nearly learned her lesson (him trying to wring out the last drips of resistance). She goes from apologetic to hysterical, grabbing his legs and begging for her life. He relents and says he'd never kill her, just keep her on the shelf until she regains her novelty. "I just couldn't stand the idea of someone else playing with my doll." His guard let down enough, she finally turns the table on him using nothing but the playthings he left for her in her room. Tied and bound, she locks him away with a "Do Not Disturb OR ELSE" knob-hanger & gets the hell out of dodge. We linger on the cell cutting forward a few days to Joker finally managing to get the knots loose, and simply saying "Ugh, dolls are for girls anyway." This is the last time we see him in the series, outside of flashbacks or cameos.
>>152590337That's what's necessary to plot out the break-up and making it stick: a combination of disgust AND fear. As for what makes Harley turn to heroism, I don't have that in place yet. It's obvious to me that whatever she becomes is gonna be a lot more like Catwoman without the subtlety: a loner making her way in the world operating outside the law. The stigma of being the Joker's Gal needs to linger for a very long time, and the discomfort it causes need to be based not in how the public views her as a menace but instead constantly sees her in his shadow. It sometimes tempts her into trying to steal the thunder back from him, but that never goes anywhere beyond think-spots. She just wants to move on, and routinely puts the hurt on people who bring him up as a running gag. The analytical part of her mind might say "Avoidance Behavior", but it doesn't impact her badly otherwise.She'll have encounters with Batman's sidekicks from time to time but only rarely with Batman himself. Not for lack of trying on Bruce's part, but she just doesn't want to hear all his thoughts on reform when she's not interested in giving up so many vices. That same concept of being overshadowed could be explored with how Nightwing, Red Robin, & Red Hood feel about their tenure under the Bat. Babs & Spoiler would come from opposite extremes, with the former refusing to believe she deserves to be anywhere outside Arkham and the latter sympathizing with trying to overcome the legacy of another villain on the path to heroism. I don't know enough about Cass or Damian so I wouldn't include them at all.Punchline would only show up much much later on, after maybe 3 seasons or a hundred issues. There's definitely something you can do with the old hotness facing off the new busted, but it's too much of a Joker presence in what's supposed to be a solo title.Finally, the costume redesign would just change the sleeves on her hat to be more easily torn off so nobody could drag her around by them.
I suppose it kind of comes down to how much of a woobie you want Harley to be. "Mad Love" makes her story extremely tragic, whereas in the comics themselves she's often played on a more triumphant note. How much of a victim should Harley be underneath her antics? Though even the DCAU has her going along with torturing Robin.
