I was recently gifted the deluxe edition of this from a family member, which was nice. Though it's kind of a chore to read in all honesty. It feels like a lot is happening but also like not a lot is happening. If that makes sense. It's all big and huge and he's throwing terms and forces around in ways that Geoff Johns would think is too much but in terms of people actually doing stuff... not really? The art's been good which is a plus and if you haven't touched this edition it's printed on really nice paper that feels good to touch.

Anyone got any thoughts on this era?

It wasn't, that family member is telling you they hate you by trying to make you read Snyderslop.

That doesn't sound like my uncle

It's alright.

I think it's neat how this formally introduced the Legion of Doom into main DC canon at least.
Specifically a version that actually tried to be like the one from the Super Friends.

That has to have been done before. I know things like Justice aren't mainline canon but no way someone didn't do this.

Genuinely awful run with a single good moment of Kid Jon bait while simultaneously ripping off DBZ. It’s fucking awful and a complete waste of Jimenez.

To be fair everything since supersons has been a waste of his talent and the worst part is his work is starting to degrade too. The latter issues of the zdarsky run were ugly enough but the fraction issues have been really lazy and shoddy. Dude needs a break and to be put on a new title.

But I do agree this JL a run was awful and mostly because of snyder using it as event set up and then never even giving it a conclusion. It ended as if it was “seeding” (his favorite pet-term) into Death Metal and yet it just ended on a dour note and never paid off.

You would think that, but no, they had big villain teams and teams using the "Legion of Doom" name, but never one that was actually a kind of mirror to the JL like Super Friends.
For example, Post-Crisis had an LoD in Extreme Justice, but it was made up of Z-Listers, and later on a version that fought the Teen Titans for some reason, made up of Titans villains of course.
For a long time, the designated big villain team of the DCU was the Secret Society of Super-Villains, not the Legion of Doom, which was ironically being used more in books like Justice.
They didn't properly adapt the team until Snyder's JL.

Whoever decided that Batkek's dialogue needed to be red font on black background speech bubbles needs to be punched in the eye. Because that's what reading it feels like.

Drowned Earth was a better story than the first.

Snyder never fucking slowed down and let the story breath, was just one thing ON TOP of another. Only reason I keep my deluxe is the art.
