The major IPs need to work self-contained from the broader universe. So someone who only cares about bat-franchise shouldnt have to get into Wonder Woman to enjoy the series.For example: if you want to do a movie about Talia-Damian, its easy because Talia is already a major part of the Batman universe. But If you'd want to do Diana-Damian you'd have introduce the whole WW-baggage first.

Damian is the blood son, and he's already preceded by others to the point "Batman's son" as a role is a mantle. Robin is a stepping stone for him to understand his place in the world. He was never meant to stay Robin, like Dick explained it's his way of trying to help him find his place in the role.
