Santa is canon in DC Comics. What a weird line to draw considering he's friends with gods.
>>
James Gunn clearly didnt read the comic where Santa flew all the way to Apocalypse, told Darkseid to his face the Anti-Life Equation is real, its in his magic sack RIGHT NOW but since he's been a very naughty boy he's getting a single lump of coal instead.
>>
>>152593261
For all the talk about "kindness" and "joy" in Gunn's DCU, this feels like a very pointed lack of whimsy.
>>
>>152593261
>More people got upset at this than to the Jor-El twist
>>
>>152593261

Gunn be the type to find burritos 2010's lolsorandumb hilarious but then find 2015 reddit wholesome humor repulsive. Double standard.

That is, to a degree, the point. In a whimsical world joy and kindness are a given. Gunn's Superman, as with many other versions throughout the years, is someone who fights to fill the world with joy and kindness even in dark or gritty or realistic worlds where they do not occur naturally. Superman would certainly still choose to do good in a world where Santa Clause did not exist.
>>
>>152593470
I always thought the point of DC was that it's a whimsical universe. Santa is real, people are nice, the knight saves the princess and they live happily ever after. Marvel is the "realistic" universe, to me. I don't think being like that is what DC should be about.
>>
>>152593470
his superman feels faker than most
>>
>>152593402
Jor-El was a born and raised Kryptonian, it's pretty reasonable that he would find it believable that the less developed race populating the Earth would only thrive under the leadership of his kryptonian son.
>>
>>152593487
That's how it is presented on the surface, but I believe DC's occult side is far darker than Marvel's magic lines.
>>
>>152593470
Gunn's Superman feels completely astroturfed and performative, they lead so hard with le heckin kindness it feels totally fake
>>
Superman not believing in Santa doesn't mean Santa doesn't exist in the DCU, it means Santa is doing his job well
>>
>>152593487
You're right, that's what it was so jarring the movies reversed them and made Marvel the reddit quip universe and DC grim dark.
>>
>>152593295
In the comics all the characters are also canonically cartoons that rely on readers from our universe to progress the flow of time, so it's natural to expect some differences in a live action universe.
>>
>>152593487
DC has Joker, and Gotham as a whole, there's no fucking hope or whimsy in any world where those exist
>>
>>152593487
The DC universe adapts to the characters it contains. That's why Gotham and Metropolis have such opposite vibes.
>>
>>152593541
Superman can fly around the world, and he Fortress of Solitude is in the North Pole.

Wer're saying Merry Christmas again folks! Don't fall for Jewthor's lies!
>>
why would superman believe in santa if he's able to fly to the north pole and see that there's nothing there
>>
>>152593557
Goes to show how general audiences only know characters through their adaptations. A shame, but it is how it is.

>>152593535
That's not the vibe I get from it. It is performative in the sense that I do not believe that Gunn himself fully takes to heart every message the movie is pushing, but I do believe he is doing his best to approach the project from a "what would Superman do" perspective.

santa is literally a character in DC.
i hate gunn so much its unreal.
>>
>>152593699
Not only that, he's implied to be older and more powerful than fucking DARKSEID.
>>
>>152593261
Gunn is so fucking clever that he dog whistles idiots about complaining if fictional character believe in other fictional characters existing.
>>
>>152593788
well hes a saint or something isnt he? that means the more people beleive in him the stronger he is. although that feels like some constantine lore and im not talking about the spirit of party.
>>
>>152593788
Marvel should cuck DC and add their version of Santa to the MCU. He's not as powerful but he's still the most powerful Omega-level mutant.
(yes it's real faggots)
>>
>>152593838
aight.
>>
>>152593600
He’s teasing his parents
>>
>>152593261
Superman doesn't actually "believes in Santa" he believes in the tradition of Santa and thinks there's value in keeping up the idea of believing in him.
>>
>>152593930
Belief isn't required when he knows him.
>>
>>152593614
Yeah but that's probably what makes his Superman movie feel "off," or it felt off to me when I tried to watch it. Something about it just feels missing. I think you've hit on what it is: that Gunn is really a pretty cynical asshole and he doesn't actually have that childlike joy and whimsy in his heart. But he knows Superman needs it, so he's trying to fake it, and it only sort of works.
>>
>>152593930
lobo met santa and lobo met superman.
you dont need to believe when its shown to be canon. you can pretend it isnt canon though.
>>
>>152593572
I don't agree with the whimsy bit when all the older iterations of heroes ended with killing a random gang member.
>>
>>152593836
you type like a fag
>>
>>152593261
Im an adult and I believe in Santa. Why?

Because I am Santa Claus.

Ho ho ho! Jimmy will get a shiny red wagon for Christmas this year!
>>
>>152593392
Kindness and joy are marketing gimmicks for him. He’s deeply cynical. I like his movies btw, but to pretend he ever truly believed in the hope and love stuff is retarded.
>>
Santa Claus literally trained Batman in those Christmas specials
>>
>>152593557

Now the real question: is this the same Saint Nicholas that slapped Arius in the face for stating the Father and the Son are not co-equal?

If yes, is the legend of him standing up and praying to thank Jesus for his life right after birth true?

If yes, is Jesus canon to the DC universe?
>>
>>152594140
does the font change?
>>
>>152594646
I'm pretty sure the Spear of Destiny has showed up a bunch of times. I don't remember all the other references.
It's pretty much 100% confirmed in modern canon thanks to the Vertigo merge.
>>
>>152594439
Yeah, him pulling le kindness is punk rock shit after years of making violent edgelord anti-hero slop is beyond duplicitous
>>
>>152594646
DC Comics for a very long time was basically a Christian universe. Christianity++, I guess you'd say. All sorts of weird shit, but ultimately the supreme lord of the universe is Capital-G God. Hell, in Morrison's JLA run the League goes to Heaven. Superman fights an angel.
>>

The Spear of Destiny and Jesus 100% exist in DC too. Hitler had that shit on him during WW2, that's why the JSA never intervened.
Obviously Santa would be "the" Saint Nicholas.

Yeah Santa literally exists in the DC universe.

A funnier thing is that Big Boss from the Metal Gear Solid games canon believes in Santa. At first this seems like a silly random joke but if you think about it, it is actually consistent with his character since during MGS3 he blindly believes everything the government says and there's a government agency called NORAD that pretends to track Santa every Christmas.

We all know it's just a silly joke but if you unquestionably believe everything the government tells you then you would need to believe Santa exists due to the NORAD Santa tracker.

Superman teamed up with Santa (to fight toy man)
Lobo fought Santa
Batman (and everyone else) has had a recent team with Edgy Santa
Santa gives Darkseid a gift
Probably other appearances too
Santa is canonically part of the DCU. I'd put him up there with the Quintessence
>>
>>152594646
One of the deliberately conflicting origins of The Phantom Stranger has him as the wandering jew.
>>
>>152593261
You think he ever looks out the window in his Fortress of Solitude? Surely he'd be able to see if Santa were there or not.
>>
>>152600008
The Stranger that is, which if you know that story woudlmake it canon if that origin were canon but they can't all be.
...Or can they?
>>
>>152593261
>>152593431
There are multiple santas in DC. Some that have even been killed. Why do people like this version so much?
>>
>>152600020
This. Santa's basically his neighbor, of course he's gonna believe in a guy who can pop over for a beer if he ever felt so inclined
>>
He's not being cute, Santa is just real In his world.
>>
>>152593600
